Smile Colo & Hardware :: Looking for partner

I'd like to find someone who has larger capacity (cage, dc, suite, any size) that would be willing to work out an ongoing relationship. I hope my desires are realistic, but I'm looking for something like:

    - Has hardware on hand that can be purchased or leased
    - Remote hands capability
    - Flexible arrangement on commitments (i.e. start with quarter rack, and expand)
    - Location has a meet-me room
    - Operates their own AS system
    - Decent bandwidth blend. Cheap bandwidth OK.
    - IPv6 capable
    - Once I get my own assignment, able to announce for me

I don't mind signing a contract of sorts. I just want someone who has resources and willing to establish a personal relationship that benefits both parties. Eventually, I'd like to have my own cage, ASN, and peering contracts.

I have over 10 years network and system administration experience. I've always worked for a company and wish to take some of my savings and venture out on my own.

So, you're looking for someone to rent/lease/sell you hardware and colo space? That's nothing crazy and a lot of colocation providers could do that for you, you just need to ask.

Most of my conversations have been unfruitful. So I was hoping to get some leads and/or others that could recommend based on personal experience.

Hey JesseSL, have you considered Centarra?

My company, <<snipped>> is doing business with them and requires everything on your list as well. I ordered 160 1U servers, 8 switches, and all the other various parts through them, and they not only built and racked all my hardware perfectly, they set the network up perfectly as well. I'll be posting photos of this to /r/cableporn at some point in the future.

I went with them because they have on site hands who are clueful, they aren't expensive, they can deal with my company as it grows, and its been generally a smooth process.

I really suggest you go talk with them.

160? You purchase them all at once?
How long did it take to procure that many?

+1. So long as you're dealing with real end providers and not just resellers, this shouldn't be difficult to offer. Even a company that just leases space themselves should be able to accommodate your requirements, so long as they have the network and human resources for it. Granted, lower cost providers may not be able to provide as much flexibility as they need to have more restrictive offerings to keep their costs down.

The question shouldn't be about whether it's technically possible, but how much it would cost. There has to be something in it for the provider after all, so you should expect pricing accordingly.

Many of the smaller colocation/dedicated server providers can do custom things like this. Take a look at the offers section and contact a few.

    Yeah, all at once.

They had to order the parts for them, but it took about a week from me finalizing the order to the parts arriving (it was during that really bad snow storm Texas had in the middle of December, so it otherwise would have came faster).

Thanks for the mention! I've seen some of the cabling jobs and I have to admit, they're really well done. Let us know when you've shared the cabling job.

160 servers isn't very much, however most places don't stock that many of a single processor.

These are some of the photos taken while the job was being done. WHT won't let me do proper links until I've posted more.

I've requested someone go in with an actual camera that isn't a potato and take more photos, but that hasn't been done yet.

With that set up, i could understand an ipmi and network switch, but what's the third for?

I have reviewed all the recommended Colo providers and they definitely look as good options. I would ask do you have any preference on: ISPs/upstreams; Shared cabinet(s) or compartments; etc. When it comes to getting ASN, you'd need to utilize a certain amount of IPs (/24 for example) in accordance with ARIN rules and then to apply for for IP space (ASN could be obtained separately and I suggest you to go and register with ARIN). Private Cages are usually expensive and most data centers are reluctant to setup one for less than 8 cabinets, so you'd need to speak to Colo providers who own the facility, or Suites in their data centers or at least could resell data center space. When it comes to Peering (it is a goo idea to say where and what kind of peering do you need), you need to go into certain data centers that are either located in the same facilities where the peering points are, or to be able to provide a transport for you to get to a any peering/IX point. Hope that this helps!

Wow, they did do a great job cabling those. Centarra looks pretty solid, at least from what you've told.

Any locations preferred for your colo partner? I'm sure a ton of providers would want to partner. Your requirements aren't unreasonable. Some providers I'd recommend are: ColoUnlimited, ReliableHost and FDCservers.

I'd give Steadfast a try - they may not be able to lease/sell you servers (though they can rent them), but they work directly with Amadi Systems who has been very helpful in getting us setup for leasing through one of their partners.

As I understand it, Amadi does have a lease to own program that works in conjunction with Steadfast and other datacenters. RME has the same sort of thing going on too, from my understanding...

Tons of useful information. I've contacted a few of the recommendations to get more details. I appreciate all the responses.
