SkyNetHosting has been terrible for the past few weeks

    And I've had it.

The first few months was fine, I was probably put in a new server and now the service has come to be just as bad as eleven2.

Everytime there is down time they blame it on a backup that's currently occuring. A question to webhosts; does backups happen at differnt times in the day? Because my websites has gone down at different points in the day and they use backups as an excuse.

It's too bad, I was hoping to host with them for a long time but I guess all good things have to come to an end.

Any hosting recommendations that have minimal down time? Will a KVM VPS give me better uptime? Any recommended KVP VPS' hosts that is around 20-30 usd/mo?

    Thanks!

I would imagine most hosts run their backup at the same time each day, to have a consistent backup history. Due to then fact that VPS costs more, in my experience it's much more reliable. Generally I think hosts like to ensure VPS and Dedicated customers are looked after the best. If you are experiencing these problems, I would simply recommend just changing hosts. There is no point just staying there and suffering downtime when there is plenty of other businesses who will have much less downtime.

If your looking for new host/VPS make sure you read the reviews! This is simply the best way to get past all the BS on there sales websites!

    Hope this helps!

My site is back up now but at the moment it's taking 36 seconds to load a single forum with only 5 people on it.

I'm going to have to think about getting a VPS. Currently considering tmzvps but if you guys know a cheaper yet good managed KVM VPS host please do post them here.

I'm assuming you mean that other random clients on the server are doing backups which are causing load issues to the point it's causing downtime?

If that is the case, then the issue is most likely the server is overloaded or poorly managed.

That's only speculation IMO, but I don't see why different clients on the same server would have different backup times. I did bring it up to their chat support just now but the person I was talking to didn't respond to me anymore.

Do they offer the backup utility in cPanel? If so, then any client should be able to perform a backup of their account at any time.

Some hosts do not offer the backup utility in cPanel because they overload their server to begin with, so they cannot handle the extra load of clients performing random account backups.

I've seen servers hosting 1,500+ accounts and high-ish average loads (7-8 8 cores) that don't even blink when packaging an account. If a cPanel backup can take the server offline, the server is severely overloaded/underpowered.

What is the average load on the server your hosted on and what are the CPU specifics (not that this is a 100% reliable benchmark)?

Then that gives clients the ability to run their own backups at any given time, which can cause load issues if the server is already running at maximum capacity or overloaded.

At this point it is only speculation and only the host themselves know the actual reason for the load levels, however, it does sound like it is an issue that needs to be addressed.

Is this default cPanel backup feature??
cPanel backup process do take lots of server resources. But it happens maximum one per day.

KVM VPS is good. Can you share purpose of VPS. How many websites you want to host. In most cases reseller hosting is better than VPS.

I disagree, a VPS gives the user root access, usually better performance typically achieved too.

It doesn't matter if it is a reseller hosting or a KVM VPS. If the provider is overloading their server, you will experience the same problem.

So, this will depend on which provider you choose to make sure they are not overselling it by putting many accounts that the server can't handle.

Backup should not be blame really. You need to consider the backup when using it together with hosting sites. It means you need to have some cpu/ram/io allowance to handle backup anytime...

I am sorry if I was not clear. I was referring to other aspects like:
    1) Low price
    2) Less technical knowledge is required.
    3) No licensing required like cPanel, softaculuous
    4) Hosting provider maintains backups.
    etc...

I do agree that VPS is better than reseller / shared hosting if you have large website and need more server resources. Or if you need to install any particular script on your server.

On that side of things, assuming they can not manage it themselves then yes a reseller would be ideal.

You do not need a VPS to enjoy high uptime and performance. A VPS can be a hassle if you do not know how to manage it yourself (your budget is too low to get a Managed VPS from a reputable provider).

If you have a budget of $20 - $30/month, why don't you consider going with a higher end shared hosting services?

A budget provider will usually cram a lot of accounts into a server while a higher end provider will usually have less accounts, which should result in better performance and uptime.
