@ctz000, how did you pay for this service (CC, PayPal Subscription, etc.)? The one scenario where this isn't the hosting providers fault is in the case of a PP Subscription, in that instance PP sends the payment to the merchant.
Just ask them to refund the charges, chances are it was a mistake. If they don't cooperate within a few days, go ahead and do a chargeback with your card provider/bank. It shouldn't be difficult to resolve as things are very much geared towards protecting consumers when it comes to things like this.
Tell them it renews when you told them not to renew it usually a host will refund the money back easy with out any issues and they will also cancel the account. If they so happen to disagree with you and don't refund anything back nor cancel the account then contact your bank / card issuer and tell them you would like to file a charge back because of a unauthorized payment which you told the person who was reviving the payment that you want to cancel service and they ignored you and still charged you z
Paypal automatically sends the next payment. You should have cancelled the subscription yourself.

If you use paypal, and they do not response to you in timely manner. You can open case from Paypal account. Once case is resolved do not cancelled your payment subscription or you will be billed again in next period.
