    DNS question

    Hi,

If I setup 2 dns only servers that link to one cpanel web server, if the web server goes down will the dns records still work?

I think the dns servers should have a copy of the records so it should work?

    Thanks

Yes, right. Its called dns cluster however you must setup external dns servers and yes, you will want to synchronize the dns records across all dns servers you have.

    Hello,

Yes the DNS resolution would still work,
As the resolution is done by one of the DNS only server.

    Regards.

    Ok thanks.

Does network speed matter for dns servers?

Also what will the propagation time be like?

Having these 2 dns servers in europe and united states will this speed up propagation?

    1. No.

    2. Propagation for setup or propagation when you make changes to records? Initial setup, usually within a few hours, but globally visible within 24-48 hours. Propagation when making changes is customizable by you - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Time_to_live

    3. No.

Based on what kind of speed you mean.. If you mean latency or actual bandwidth. Bandwidth doesn't really matter, except if you serve really a lot of traffic, but latency matters because if latency is high, the response for the DNS query will be longer, resulting in longer time for you to get the IP, which means longer time for the page to load, for the initial DNS lookup.

If it's cached, no it doesn't matter

Cpnel has a version called "DNSONLY". Here's some docs about setting up a DNS cluster:

    http://docs.cpanel.net/twiki/bin/vie...nfigureCluster

I think the 'speed' you're referring to would be TTL. You can set the TTL to a low number like 3600, which would make external DNS servers update your records more frequently. But in reality, those external DNS servers could ignore your settings and update at their own pace too.

If your budget permits, look into 'anycast DNS' instead.
