Question How many OpenVZ containers can I run on these dedicated servers, and other questions?

    Hi,

I'm interested in starting a OpenVZ VPS hosting business in the future. I was looking at some dedicated servers and I found a few that I like with similar price.

    Here are the specs:

    First configuration:
    CPU: Intel Core i7-4770 3.4GHz
    RAM: 32GB DDR3
    SSD: 2x240GB software RAID 1
    PORT: 200 Mbit/s
    TRAFFIC: 20TB/month
    PRICE: 60€/month
    Second configuration:
CPU: AMD Opteron, 8 Cores, 8x 2.3 GHz
    RAM: 24GB DDR3
SSD: 2x 120 GB SSD, 80K IOPS software RAID 1
    PORT: 100 MBit/s
    TRAFFIC: Unlimited
    PRICE: 50€/month
    Third configuration:
    CPU: Intel Xeon E3 1225v2
    RAM: 32GB DDR3
SSD: 2x 120 GB SSD software RAID 1
    PORT: 200 Mbit/s
    TRAFFIC: Unlimited
    PRICE: 50€/month
I want SSD VPS service as it's better mostly. I personally like the first configuration the most. My VPS hosting should allow game servers, voice servers, web hosting etc. CPU should be max to 50%.
I plan on coding my own VPS panel but maybe I will use SolusVM as it has a lot of features.

Other problem are IP addresses some hosts give maximum up to /27 subnet 30 usable IP addresses to one dedicated server. Will that number of IPs be enough per one dedicated server?

My main questions are how many average VPSs should I put on all 3 configurations and what dedicated server configuration would give best results?

I should note that I'm just exploring possibilities and would like to see other suggestions and opinions.

    Thanks in advance!

first you will need to know what is the level of service you are going to provide
are you going to provide a high quality service or a cheap service
in high quality service you may put 1 or 2 vps per dedicated server
the cheap service you can put as much as you want depend on how many ips you own

    Great answer from badboyx.

Sometimes you can put maybe 100 VPS's which are not loaded at all. Sometime you can have only 1 VPS who can eat up all your resources.

I was planning to go with lower prices, but not to decrease the customer satisfaction too much, as when people buy VPS for game servers or web sites they mostly worry about the price. That's something from my experience.

    Best Regards!

if you are planing to use the servers for gaming vps, don't forget to protect servers with anti ddos protection and hardware firewall, as from experience I seen the ddos attacks with size of 500M - 750M bps

    @badboyx:

Why would a provider install 1 VPS per server? I mean why to use virtualization if there is only 1 VPS per server? It's better to use the server directly with no virtualization...

Regarding OP's question...On SSD's you can go with a large number of VPS per server. The most abused resource is the storage. Being SSD you wont have problems with I/O usage. Think about the offers. I would be careful with the bandwidth. How much bandwidth will you offer per VPS?
If you choose to create your own VPS control panel, be very careful with the security. Check 100 times for any vulnerability. I would better recommend you to use SolusVM or other VPS control panel instead. Why to reinvent the wheel?

i agree with you its better to use the server directly but sometimes its not. some people may broke the whole OS by a small mistake like ( rm -rf / ) or things like. so its better to be under a VM to restore things quickly and FREE + the unlimited FREE OS reload
another reason saving 50% on cPanel/WHM licenses

What can I do about DDoS protection? I need a server in Germany with DDoS protection, most providers that offer lower prices don't have DDoS protection. Starting price for a VPS would be 5$ and I don't know if I could cover the dedicated servers price, IP range, SolusVM license, etc.?

    Best Regards!

@Vita94: The location should be only Germany? There are not very reliable DDoS protected providers in Germany. Also keep in mind that DDoS protection is not cheap, so if you plan to offer DDoS protected VPS, you should rethink a little your pricing.
