    * Is it harmless to delete these folders in /mail folder please?

We've got dozens of folders in the /mail folder of our webhosting account with names such as ""

Within these folders there are the following folders, all of which are empty:

The date of the creation of these folders is four years ago.

Does anybody know what these folders are for please? Is it OK to delete these folders?

    Thanks very much.

From the suggested file name could be contact in created from a webmail account. Generally speaking anything in:

    /new is unread mail
    /cur is mail that's read
/tmp is generally things moved between /new and /cur

If the account is still active and you have scanned the files and they are not a threat probably safe to leave theme unless you need space.
