    What server to choose?

    Hello guys,

I need to buy a dedicated server but I don't know what to choose.
    Can someone help me please?

Currently I have this one from OVH: (where I am not happy)
    Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-2400 CPU @ 3.10GHz
    # of Cores: 4
    # of Threads: 4
    16GB RAM
    1Gbps
    2T SATA3 + 2T SATA3
Price: 120€ (vat + cpanel included)

I need to decide between this 3 options:

    OPTION 1
    HP DL380pG8 (12xLFF)
    2x Intel Octa-Core Xeon E5-2650
    # of Cores: 8
    # of Threads: 16
    128GB DDR3
    4x240GB SSD in RAID 10
100 TB Datatraffic included (uplink 1GE)
Price: 280€ (vat + cpanel excluded)

    OPTION 2
    HP DL380pG8 (12xLFF)
    2x Intel Octa-Core Xeon E5-2650
    # of Cores: 8
    # of Threads: 16
    64GB DDR3
    4x240GB SSD in RAID 10
100 TB Datatraffic included (uplink 1GE)
Price: 230€ (vat + cpanel excluded)

    OPTION 3
    HP DL380eG8 (12xLFF)
    2x Intel Hexa-Core Xeon E5-2420
    # of Cores: 6
    # of Threads: 12
    64GB DDR3
    4x240GB SSD
Price: 250€ (vat + cpanel included)

    OPTION 4
    HP DL180G6
    2x Intel Quad Core E5620
    # of Cores: 4
    # of Threads: 8
    64GB DDR3
    4x240GB SSD
    RAID 10 (Stripe + Mirror)
Price: 200€ (vat included but without cpanel)

What server do you think that is best for me?
most of it is to run forums and blogs... I don't want to change server so soon.

I think that option 3 have a good server with a good price too, what do you say? Is option 1 and 2 much better than option 3?

    Thanks!

Option 2s processor is better than Option 3. Option 2 also has RAID 10, whilst Option 3 doesn't. Option 2 is also slightly cheaper than Option 3 but doesn't include cPanel, you could purchase a cPanel license from somewhere like buycpanel anyway.

I think Option 2 is definitely a good choice because of the RAID 10, and better processor.

Sorry... all of them have RAID 10 and 100 TB Datatraffic included.

What server should you choose? See the price between them...
Option 2 with VAT and cPanel is 300€ month, option 3 is 250€ month
Is processor of the option 2 server deserves 50€ more?

Option 2s Processor is faster with Turbo Boost and has a bigger Cache, it also has more Cores and Threads. I guess it depends on how intensive the sites are that you want to run.

I think Option 3 would be fine though.

Most forums and blogs doesn't give us an exact idea though. How big on average are the databases? How much traffic is each site getting per day?

The E5-2650 is a much better processor than the E5-2420 as per CPU benchmark(http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html). Option 4 has worse CPU performance than the CPU you are using now. The decision then would be between option 1 and option 2 depending on how much RAM you may need. The best idea would be start with option 2 and then upgrade the RAM as you may need (depending if the server allow these upgrades).

Thank you for your replies buddies!

Option 1 is too much expensive for me, is about 365€ per month with vat and cpanel... options now is between 2 and 3.

Option 2 with VAT and cPanel is 300€ month, option 3 is 250€ month
Is processor of the option 2 server deserves 50€ more?

It depends: The E5-2650 is one of the top 20 in the market : http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?....60GHz&id=2042

The E5-2420 is a good CPU too: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?....90GHz&id=1213

If you don't want to change servers soon the best idea would be the most recent and powerful CPU and that would be option 2.

First you need to know why your current configuration doesn't work as you wish. You need to find a "bottle neck", if any. Than you can specifically target this bottle neck. For example:

    1. Low I/O of HDDs -> switch on SSDs
    2. High CPU usage -> see hdds I/O first, than upgrade / add CPU

Your approach just to go for the best hardware is expensive and not necessarily will solve your problem. (f.e. you may have very bad written SQL queries or php code, so it will be slow on ANY cpu).

From the other side if your CPU usage is low, better CPU will give you zero performance gain. you will be just paying more.

I would highly recommend to study the problem with your current server first.
