Looking for highland width for Video steaming USA

I'm looking at the various options for setting up a linear stream TV station.
Some definitions first since most of you aren't in the TV business:
A linear stream is like a real-time stream but instead of the stream coming from a live camera, it comes from a play out server that plays out to the live stream, pre-compressed videos. Think like one of the major networks i.e. cbs, nbc, abc etc. A lot of the real time broadcast is playing back video (pre-recorded shows) along with some live studio segments.

The following kind of components are used:
A playout server which takes a schedule based on time and plays he proper video at the proper time.
A media library consisting of all the media that the play out server uses.
A master control function (which receives that play out server and live studio feeds) and upstreams it to the streaming server.
A steaming server to serve the stream to client players.

For the near term, the output of the streaming server would be about 1tb per month (basically one stream to a broadcast vendor at 3mbs 24/7

storage requirements would be 2-4 tb of raid.

Another indépendant requirement we have is to allow producers the ability to transfer huge media files to us efficiently and quirky, which range in size from 30-60 gb each. Depending on whether you count outbound only, we are talking about in the 50-100 tb per month range.

I have a pretty good handle on streaming servers (i.e. flash) and various master control and media library sources, but still looking for a good play out software.

What kind of costing would people give for being able to do this (as far as hosting costs)? also recommended vendors I should be looking at? Also if anybody has recommendations for software parts.

To push 50-100TB per month you will need a server with a 1Gbps port speed.

Do you have a preferred location within the USA? ie. west coast? east coast? central? Narrowing your desired location within the USA will help you narrow your provider.

First off, I doubt there's a plug-and-play software solution for your specific needs. You'll likely have to either build your own or pay someone to build something for you. There might be some basic scripts out there to start from, but they'll likely require a decent amount of customization.

There are also probably a few different possible directions you could go in for hosting the media itself. The most ideal solution would probably be to have the media stored and distributed in multiple geographic areas and have a process that sync's them up. Again, that's going to be a software requirement... there's likely nothing out of the box for that.

The server specs are likely going to depend on how efficient your software is and of course your budget. Though you'll almost definitely want a GB, or multiple GB uplinks. You're probably looking somewhere between $150-$400/month.

  4. You could deploy Wowza for something like this, but you'd need to do some work on it in terms of tuning and writing front-end software for it to get it to do what you require. I'm not aware of any software package that will do what you want right out of the box.

I'd suggest contact Wowza directly and seeing if they can suggest someone for you to discuss your project with!

    Good luck.

    Thanks for the replies.

The access to good network distribution would be more important than physical location (if the hosting company is managing the hardware), otherwise I'm in the DC area.

Yes I'm looking at Wowza, also Kaltura for media management. Also have been looking at media looks dot com for a media play out.

The costs mentioned are well within budget.

    Playout:
    http://www.casparcg.com/

    or MLT:
    http://www.mltframework.org/twiki/bin/view/MLT/Features

Difficult to setup, but cheap (free) and have many features.

    Streaming:
Wowza. Kaltura is more media management CMS, than media streaming server, but you can use Kaltura for VoD and recordings.

Thanks for the links. Unfortunately casparcg is designed to play out to sdi video cards for an on premiss solutions so it won't work for me. Wowza looks like a good possibly.

So it looks like what I need to be getting is something with 4/5x2tb with raid 5/6 windows server with hyper-v, probably at least 32gb, a higher power 4-6 core processor (for transcoding), 1gbps bandwidth that I can do 200tb (or at least grow there inexpensively), a few IP address, and a well connected network. Location is less important then being well connected in the use. I'm looking at various options including eventually using an east coast and west coast server so vendor with both capabilities could be a plus depending on costs.
