    Where to buy used servers?

We're getting ready to move from dedicated hosting to colo, and we're looking at some used hardware (cost is a concern). Right now I am looking at Stallard, Unix Surplus, and deepdiscountservers.com. Any that i'm obviously missing? We're going to need 30 or so 1U dual quad/hex core machines with 32 or more gb of ram, 3 larger database servers, a couple to handle image serving, and the switches and such to make it all work. It looks like I may have to order from two or three different places (no one seems to have enough of the hardware we need at a good price)

    Take a look at esiso.com and tcsystemsonline.com

I've had great experiences with both and continue to buy from em. TC is generally a bit more expensive (but their warranties are great!). The tradeoff from my experience with both of em is eSISO is less expensive, TC has better customer support.

There was a similar thread recently. It has some of the companies you mentioned, but might still be useful.

I sometimes find it cheaper to buy a new server than gearing up used server with used parts. Is it because new server is cheaper in Hong Kong without a long way to ship?

Have you look at eBay? Just a piece of advice, watch for the high S&H prices.

Everyone would recommend you their own hardware vendor as anyone has experience with one or two companies like these. We use ICC-USA and a few more. What kind of servers do you want to buy? I would suggest you to spend some time comparing the a few brands and to find out which one would be easy to deal with when it comes to repair and replacements.

So far I have found the best pricing on ebay. Place I found has 1,000 of the servers I need and free shipping. Can't beat that!

Odds are they come with no ram or hdd's - be careful with what you purchase on ebay.

I can recommend Belmont Technology for used boxes. I've purchased a few machines from them and have no issues dealing with them.

We have bought off-lease/used servers when the situation required it from STI (http://www.stikc.com/), and Belmont Technology Remarketing (http://stores.ebay.com/BTR-TECH-SALE...p2047675.l2563 and http://www.ebay.com/sch/belmonttech/...&_trksid=p3686). Both vendors have treated us quite well.

You can find people selling used servers here at WHT. Check the hardware section.

Craigslist is also a good option if you can find a data center that is trying to get rid of their used servers, but watch out for age of hardware and quality.

There is that website with a great looking template and great prices, it was updated a couple of months back and emailed all their registered users about the update, any idea what was its name again..?

Seeking the DELL C6100 really for a while now, it is a shame though deepdiscountservers don't provide them with the standard low cost 6-Core or 4-Core L5520 anymore

    Help is greatly appreciated,,
I have checked the resellers on this thread and pending their responses..

ebay... usually all hardware vendors are there.

Craigslist may work also for local pickups. Usually you may find some used servers locally for super cheap.

    Where do you need them?

Trust me I spent the past couple of months searching for it, but I just couldn't find the server with the specs I need + (1 YEAR WARRANTY)

Also unfortunately some eBay sellers don't seem interested selling these days as they do not answer their messages

    Will keep looking...

    http://myworld.ebay.com/ciscoexpertonline (switches)

    http://myworld.ebay.com/gcisurplussales (another switch)

    http://www.ebay.com/usr/mobile_computer_pros (32 servers)

You'll get better pricing on new servers if your order is large enough. Used server pricing is meh compared to a good salesrep.

I have bought 40 or so used Supermicro servers from a number of sources over the past couple of years including Unix Surplus (Mountain View), Northbay Networks (Emeryville) and 4YourBusiness (Hayward). They always seem to list their stuff on eBay. I ended up picking them up in person so I got to meet the people and see their operations. With each batch I sometimes had some minor issues with a server or two (such as power supply, hard drive failed, etc.) but they all provided a short warranty (15 or 30 days but I don't recall exactly) and everything was replaced with no hassle. Once in production everything has been rock solid except for hard drive failures, which I normally would not deploy used hard drives but in this instance what they were being used for was not mission critical. I can highly recommend all these companies.
