On or about December 28, request the EPP code. Once you have that in hand, prepare the transfer at the gaining registrar, and with that waiting to be submitted, visit the losing registrar and unlock the name. Check it's unlocked (status will say something like "ok"), then start the transfer from the gaining registrar.
I would not suggest unlocking until you're prepared to move it.Your one stop shop for decentralization

Hello,
Following are the steps to transfer a domain:
1. First you need to get an EPP [Extensible Provisioning Protocol] code from loosing registrar.
2. After getting EPP code, kindly contact the gaining registrar.
3. One verification e-mail with transfer approval link will be sent at the registered email address by gaining registrar. The registrant has to click on that link and approve the domain transfer request.
4. After that the domain will be transferred within 4 to 5 business days.
Before initiating the domain transfer request one has to make sure that,-
1. The domain must be 60 days old.
2. The domain must not be locked at the loosing registrar.
3. The domain must not be deleted.
4. The domain must be in OK or ACTIVE status.
Domain transfer can be failed due to the following reasons,-
1. An invalid/Incorrect authorization code i.e. EPP code.
2. An expired domain.
3. An invalid administrative contact email.
4. The domain is locked at current registrar.
5. The domain is not 60 days old.
6. An administrative contact of the domain did not respond to the verification e-mail.
7. The transfer has been rejected by losing registrar.
With kind regards,

Hi,
If domain is locked at your registrar, whois will reflect it as below:
Domain Status: clientTransferProhibited
If you unlock the domain and check in Whois, you will find the status of your domain as below after 8 to 12 hours. [Depending upon the time taken to unlock the domain and to propagate domain status on Whois by your existing registrar]:
Registrar Status: ok
OR
Domain Status: ok
During the domain transfer process, if you want to know the status of your domain, simply update your gaining registrar.
Regards,

Hi,
Approval E-mail with transfer approval link will be sent to you at the registered E-mail address which you have placed in the transfer form by “Gaining Registrar”. You have to click on that link and approve the domain transfer request. It does not take 1 or 2 days. If you do not receive that E-mail, please contact your gaining registrar.
With best regards,
