301's for URL's of growing site

This will be the first time I have done this so pardon me if it looks obvious.

My website is 2 tier but growing so now I need to make it into 3 levels e.g.

www.example.com/how-to-do-this.htm (and several other how to's)

    into

www.example.com/tips/how-to-do-this.htm (and several other how to's)

Basically I am reading that a 301 redirect in cpanel from the former to the latter URL is the way to do it. My only concern is how might this affect search engines and / or social shares I have previously obtained?

Search engines won't be affected in a negative way. Once they crawl your website the next time the links will be updated and the pages will soon start ranking again (although you might experience a drop if you also change page elements).

Social shares will also redirect just like search engines (301/Permanent redirect is actually server side so it is not something that only search engines interpret.)

Depending on the structure of the site the transfer might not be easy so you should consider hiring somebody, unless you are willing to learn it on your own (which is not a bad thing).

In general 301 redirection will not affect search engine ranking at all but the in case you are using any redirection code in meta then need to be careful regarding hosting platform (windows, linux ).

If you have a Google WEBMASTER TOOLS account, you can check there as well to see if any issues with the redirects you've done. Not to mention it'll show any problems with your site (from a bot's perspective).
