    R22 Costs

Is anyone else getting hammered by absurd R22 costs from their mechanical contractors? Ours wants $30/LB for R22 and that is supposedly "at cost". Meanwhile, I can buy it off eBay for < $10/LB.

Under $10/lb is a good price. You will need an EPA certification in order to buy it directly. For what it's worth, I pay $13/lb locally in Dallas for 30-pound jugs.

$30/lb is a pretty fair going rate for R22 thru a contractor. I usually see $40-50/lb quoted. One quote even came in at $75/lb! As the quota for R22 diminishes, you can expect this to continue.

If you plan to run your R22 systems for a while, stock up while you can get it for under $10/lb.

$10-$15 a jug on Craigslist. Or do like we did, take the EPA tests (there are 2)and get certified to buy it yourself.

    United States phaseout[edit]

R-22 has been mostly phased out in new equipment in the United States (...), and has been replaced by other refrigerants with lower ozone depletion potential such as propane (R-290), pentafluoroethane, R-134a (1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane), and blended mixtures of HFCs such as R-409A, R-410A, R-438A, and R-507A.[5][6] See refrigerant for specific components of the R-400 and R-500 HFC blends used to replace R-22.
