Most probably your shared hosting account is a cPanel account. Are you planning to move to a non-cPanel VPS???

If you are considering cPanel, consider minimum 1-2 GB RAM.

Shared Hosing is hosted on cPanel but on a VPS cPanel would cost you 15$ and remember you also have to pay monthly cost of VPS too.

I'm using Interserver VPS service during 2,5 year and it's excellent. cPanel costs 10$/month there and 2 slices works fine with cPanel. Tech support is very fast and professional. So, Interserver is highly advised from my point of view.

Have you tried optimizing MySQL and Apache.
Use top command to see what process is using maximum memory.

How's he going to do that on shared hosting?
There's no such thing as an unmanaged server - It's actually self-managed. Worth remembering next time you're looking for someone to complain to.
