Is a "managed" vps good enough or get it hardened from 3rd party?
I've just gotten myself a VPS from tmz as they seem to be a popular company in these forums. I've gotten their managed VPS but I was wondering if a service provider's managed service is good enough or should I hire an external server hardening company for an initial setup?
WHM/cPanel is installed on this server along with NGinx, Varnish and Percona. My primary use of thise VPS is to run a few Wordpress based websites.
Each company will differ, each company will have different levels of talent / sysadmins so there's really no base level for what's 'good enough', if in doubt ask your managed provider about their service and what levels of security etc they're putting in place.
First off I would like to welcome you to tmzVPS . When you purchase a VPS we do a series of changes to your VPS it to make it more secure.
You can always open an additional ticket and ask for additional hardening of your VPS which could be done by my staff. If you have any questions you can always PM me or e-mail me at daniel [[@]] tmzvps dot com

Great question and something I am going through myself with TMZ.
I too am in a similar situation whereas I am used to using an unmanaged server and getting a third party to harden it for me (at a cost). I think the beauty of using a third party is they can, and do, supply a full list of all changes they make to the server and why, whereas with TMZ I have been unable to get a list of any of the changes made during the 'hardening' process.
I must point out that this is in no way a slur of TMZ, Daniel and his support staff have been very quick and pleasant with their support to date, but it would be great to see exactly what has been carried out so I can compare it to what I usually have carried out.
Interestingly enough, this was mentioned on the TMZ forum a while back but never actually followed up...
Mike- if you dont me asking, which company did you use to harden your VPS? I've heard good things about Rack911
Daniel- could I also please get a list of activities performed for hardening my VPS? I had requested this after the setup was completed and was informed that it was done. BTW, you guys are amazing with support tickets. Very fast and helpful!
