    MySQL won't start

I shutdown MySQL via PuTTy using service mysql stop and now it won't restart or start. Just displays the following:
Starting MySQL... ERROR! The server quit without updating PID file (/var/lib/mysql/hostname.domain.pid).
I have cPanel and WHM installed by the way.

How can I get it to start?

Try rename your "hostname.domain.pid" file to to something like "hostname.domain.pid_old" and then attempt to start MySQL.

Is it a whm/cpanel server? If yes, have you tried restarting it through WHM?

    Yeah! Thanks, that has worked.

    Used:
    sudo mv /etc/my.cnf /etc/my.cnf.bak

It is indeed, but the error was blocking WHM from restarting the process unfortunately so I had to do it via command line.

    Glad your issue is resolved.
On one of my server, mysql wasn't restarting through command line, then i tried to restart it through WHM and it works like a charm. That's why gave you same suggestion to give it a try through WHM.

IIRC in that way you are starting mysql without a conf file... are you sure that's the correct way to fix it?

Yes, when the service mysql starts it'll automatically create a new conf file. If it didn't, it wouldn't run at all.

I probably shouldn't have stopped the mysql service via command line anyway. It's my fault.

When something like this happens, you can always review the MySQL error log which would be my first point of call. /var/lib/mysql/$hostname.err

Sure, but all the settings, customizations and security enhancesments are lost in that way...
