When you're learning to ride and don't need the strength of an elephant, a donkey is fine. A VPS is fine for learning, you'd be surprised how much a VPS can do. Of my ~10 or so dedis/VMs, my main machine is a 5$/m VPS with 384MB of ram that I've had for years, and it runs a bunch of services without issue on its single core. Linux is great, you don't need to throw resources at it, you just need to manage it correctly.

Also, for the price of a dedi, you can get multiple VPSes and start messing with monitoring suites, redundant services, etc.

Linux is a lot of fun, but if its just a hobby you don't need to buy the biggest, baddest server.

EDIT: Follow this site and jump on any deals/locations that seem awesome, http://lowendbox.com/ - A few yearly VPS deals can be cheap and great for playing with.

you can setup your own dedicated server at home (actually it's your PC attached to internet), ..with blackjack and hookers. In fact, forget the dedicated server and the blackjack..
