how do you send account details to customer

Automated by a billing software. Now in ours we include in the line to change your password after your first login to make it more secure.

No password is sent out in plain text, the customer can see the password only inside billing system, on SSL connection, and of course email is verified before login in our billing system.

The first access to the account should be sent automatically through the billing software, and within this email it should state something about them logging in and changing their password to something unique and secure. In some instances you can even force password updates on the first login, this should help add another layer of security to your customer's sensitive information.

The most secure...a distribution network of pigeon mail. Each state, and each city has pigeons waiting to fly your passwords right to your desk or desired location.

    Next is a sealed envelope.

Last, a phone call from Don LaFontaine (the movie trailer voice). Each character of the password said slowly, followed by coming this Summer!

The clients password is always encrypted and never sent via email.

The generated password for cpanel/ftp is always sent via email. A password change is highly recommended.

Sent via email from the billing system. The customer can then change their password in the customer area.

If your customer is using SSL for mail checking, and you use SSL SMTP for mail sending, then it's secure.
I use SSL for all public website (login is most important), and email for credential sending, but never use IM in this case.

We use email to send customer account details. Email providers should handle security.

The client sets their password when setting up the account, and they never see it outside of our encrypted system.

Entered by the client during sign-up.

Never understood why some billing panels show passwords in the client area either.
They should only have a button to reset them there.

The customer types the password when signing up. This becomes their cPanel password and client area password, so it is not sent to them via email. If they forget the password (for client area or cPanel) they can reset it from the client area.

That isn't correct. The email itself is still sent to the remote host insecurely. Like so:

Your mail client -> SSL -> your mail server -> insecure -> remote mail server -> SSL -> their mail client

I send everything except the password in an email. In the password section we leave it empty or put stars in it. But we also send it over the secure ports
