When going for a domain name, I always try to grab the .com version. Mostly because when I create a site and tell people the name, they usually only hear the name portion and automatically try and add .com to the end.
Plus, if the guy that has the .com version is your direct competitor, he will get a lot more incidental traffic than you will with a .net or .org, possibly getting some of your customers!
In the brick and mortar world, they say location is most important. On the web, the .com is the equivalent of having that perfect corner spot on a busy intersection.
Still, if the domain name itself is really important to you, .net is a close second to .com and then .org. Though I am just as likely to go with a .biz or a country code as a .org. Usually, if .com and .net are taken, I look for a new name altogether.
