On the front end both are VPS, the difference is on the backend. VPS are on standalone hardware nodes with local storage, while Cloud VPS means the VPS have automatic hardware failover with separate or distributed storage.

One thing to note is however, not all providers using the term "Cloud" have automatic hardware failover. Some are used as a marketing gimmick.

    not really a gimmick

many would argue that "cloud" is a delivery model, more so then an infrastructure model

in which case, things like a utility offering, full IaaS type of solution - is more legitimate use of the term "cloud", then a failover infrastructure that lacks many IaaS features and functions

I do agree that the word "cloud" in this industry, on the whole, is a marketing term - but, that doesnt make it a gimmick. embrace it, as its here to stay I think - at least for the forseeable future

Take 2 cases, both using OnApp:

    1) Hypervisor setup with SAN storage. All Hypervisors are maxed out with resources.

    2) Hypervisor setup with DAS storage.

Both are cloud, neither have failover.

VPS is a virtual private machine which is created inside a physical server it is typically offered as a contracted service with static features while Cloud is a pool of physical servers running many virtual machines. It allows you only pay for what you use.
