I haven't tried ASP on Apache because I've heard nothing good about the combination. I use ASP at work on IIS and PHP or perl for nix, so my opinion would be to stick with a windows host for ASP. I will pay attention to this thread myself to see if anyone else has a positive post about using ASP with Apache.

ASP with Apache is not stable by a longshot. Sure you can run little 'hello world' scripts, but as far as a CPU intensive application goes, you can forget about it.

This is the real problem with asp. It was introducted by Mircosoft to increase the need for windows servers. Although I do know that some hosts can run windows servers just fine, I also know that before the word Windows come Mircosoft, and and thing with that word in it can be bad.

You will pay out your ass for a windows hosting account because unlike linux it costs the server owner(quoting from memery but may be wrong) $2000 for Win2000 Advanced Server license. Like I said that quote may be wrong, but I do know that linux is free and windows is not. Not to mention that imo a windows server is less stable than a nicly ran linux server.

ASP is great, and so is .net, but most of the things you can get from asp you can also get from jsp. Although jsp is unliked by some hosts, it has came a long way. JSP interperturs are now almost as fast as ASP.

I know that this is not exactly the answer to your questions, it is food for though.

If you understand my ranting that is, lol.

it depends on which is more important to you
PHP or ASP

if ASP is more important then Windows with PHP
if PHP is more important then Linux/Unix with Chillsoft

php runs on windows much better than asp does on linux.

interseen: aargh. there are no 'jsp interpreters'. java is a compiled language. (what it is compiled into is a different matter).

You'll also want to consider what database you'll be running as ASP is typically tied with MS Access and/or MS Sql on Win and mySql on Nix. Most ASP scripts aren't written for mySql however so you may find yourself rewriting some scripts to get it to work on a Nix box. PHP, on the other hand, is typically written for mySql and most Win servers don't support mySql so you may find yourself rewriting PHP to run on a Win box.

As for ChiliSoft vs Apache ASP, ChiliSoft supports some VBScript, which most Win ASP scripts utilize, whereas Apache ASP doesn't support VBScript. This comes at a small price though however as Chilisoft isn't free.

Greetings:

SunOne, which I believe is the new name for ChiliSoft ASP, is approximately 90 to 95% compatible with Microsoft's implementation of ASP.

Most of the incompatibilities come in the form of Windows native operating system issues and components like CDNOTS (Java beans is used instead of DLL's et all).

Take care.

you can install mysql on a bloze box, but i want to see you run mssql on linux =]

your best bet is probably one of the companies that offers win/lin reseller accounts all rolled into one.
