Server naming conventions and rack cable labeling

Dear all, we are just shifting across to a new rack and until now have used names of cartoon characters. This is not going to work anymore, and need a better naming convention.

I am interested to see what other people use, physically i would like to name the servers by location, and then have an alias as to its actual function/customer, i.e.

    LONS1R1SVR1 meaning London, suite 1, rack 1, server 1

Since the servers can be reassigned from time to time, for the above physical server name, i would have an alias as a column in a spreadsheet, that would be set to the customers hostname, i.e.

    wwww.customerserver1.com

For patching, I am looking at labeling up the physically connections, i.e.

    LON1S1R1SVR1-PWR1,
    LON1S1R1SVR1-PWR2
    LON1S1R1SVR1-ETH0
    LON1S1R1SVR1-KVM

Ultimately it may be confusing having a physical host-name and customer alias, interested to know what you run with and any other recommendations?

You may want to consider the switchport they are plugged into as well.

Thanks Brian for the valuable insight, thing is the network may change after we get up to 40 nodes or so, may well shift or consolidate to different rack. For sure the network backbone will change as additional bandwidth providers come on board... so it could mean a lot of renaming if servers are moved physically.

Idea of all the info, including switch-port as you mentioned, perhaps in this scenario is better kept on a spreadsheet?

I would keep it as short as possible. With 40 servers you are not google yet so assign letters for racks. A10 will be London rack a server 10 and G10 will be Seattle rack G server 10. Reserve few letters for future racks near by like B,C,D for London H,I,J for Seattle.
