Thanks Brian for the valuable insight, thing is the network may change after we get up to 40 nodes or so, may well shift or consolidate to different rack. For sure the network backbone will change as additional bandwidth providers come on board... so it could mean a lot of renaming if servers are moved physically.
Idea of all the info, including switch-port as you mentioned, perhaps in this scenario is better kept on a spreadsheet?
I would keep it as short as possible. With 40 servers you are not google yet so assign letters for racks. A10 will be London rack a server 10 and G10 will be Seattle rack G server 10. Reserve few letters for future racks near by like B,C,D for London H,I,J for Seattle.
