Thanks for your attachment .Seems like I/O causing issue .Improper management could be another reason for all downtime/slow yet for now i would suggest to use atleast RAID disks and judge performance afterthat.

There is no reason you need to double your budget, your budget right now should be fine to get you on to 2 x SSD's in Raid-1. I am pretty confident that your issue is probably with disk IO so by going to SSD's it will resolve these issues and increase performance a lot!

Thanks for all the suggestions and now I need some help finding a good deal or how much I should be paying.

I am with Singlehop and spoke to their sales today and they offered a new server, which I am not against i think my server is jinxed anyhow...lol.....SingleHop server has demonstrated time and time again that it simply cannot handle the important high traffic situations that are the key to business success throughout the year. No one should have to request server restarts as much as I have. After being offline for 3 hours last night their support team has let me down once to often and they will need a miracle offer to keep my business.I felt very underwhelmed by the cost and specs anyhow.

I want a managed server as i don't care to deal with it, good support 24/7 USA located. Really great Specs. Something maybe we can scale as we grow or a company that will help us along the way, preventive maintenance versus reactive maintenance.

Who should I be looking at for managed servers with great support, good priced servers and willing to work with us as we grow , not just take our cash and run.....lol

Your server quote shows you have 2 SSD drives as well as the 500GB drive so you should look into using.

The problem you have with management of such providers is you end up dealing with front-level, inexperienced staff, who think it's acceptable just to reboot/restart services rather than investigate the root cause and prevent it but equally at such rates you have to understand you bare some of the responsibility yourself.

I would advise you complain and request to be escalated to a supervisor or management and that you want the issues you are encountering (From the graphs you have, it's like a short sharp increase in disk activity) identified and resolved. A more experienced engineer will be able to tell you pretty quickly what the issue is, like I said given the nature and as it doesn't correlate to traffic increases it's likely be some sort of stat/log processor or backup.

In essence make a pain of yourself to insist these things get resolved and not just a temporary quick fix once it's happened (IE reboot/restart). Since you will likely find this is something that's easily fixed and you won't have these outages then you can decide from there about weather you want to find a new provider or not.

Thanks for the advice, I plan to make myself a pain in the but and get things resolved and find out what Singlehop is really all about.

We had our server go down this morning again they had this too say "It seems as soon as we restart the apache service, the server runs out of memory and becomes unresponsive. Do you have any ddos protection enabled with cloudflare?" lol........

Which we have based on their recommendation and their suggested settings.

But now I have a senior tech Michael O'Brien "I can see that the server is online right now without any issues. I will stay logged into the server so that I can monitor it and see if I can catch what is causing the server to go offline."

I look forward to the outcome of this

I am no guru , I run good size website and my dev consults me on what needs to be done but dealing with these server issues are beyond my knowledge. I got a lil angry today and call the account manager and it is a friday so ofcourse my website will see little help till monday. However I have support watching it...he,he.... I sent a long winded message filling him in on the issues and ,my expectations.I am sure he does not care though.

See what you are encountering is the classic example of the inexperienced, tutorial based, sysadmins you get around industry. The first person handling it instead of saying "apache is running out of memory" and then instantly assuming it's a DDoS, then no doubt running those usual stupid netstat commands you see about here and firewalling random IP's , should have told you WHY it was crashing. The silly thing is a few hours training on investigating performance issues would help their skill sets and in turn stop customers being so annoyed.

It is obviously unreasonable to expect them to dig parts of your application but they could at the very least point you to what is being requested, what requests are currently hung/taking too long and maybe even the current mysql query list which will likely help your particular application.

I agree 110% Send us in the right direction , I will either have my dev fix or bring in someone who can.But these are the stupid answers we keep getting that frustrate us.If our hosting company can't give us the right answer who can? I mean this is stupid and gone on for too long.

I know SingleHop has some good techs but too many inexperienced people.I know every company is going to have their bad apples just too many bad apples for my business to reply on.

In the world of managed dedicated servers here in the USA how do I find the ones with great tech support? Anyone can sell me a server and have good prices but I want to find the ones with rockstar support that know what the hell is going and prevent stuff or help fix these issues.

My contact is with them till march but they may not last the week at this rate.

I need a list of who to replace Singlehop with?

Go a try with UnitedHosting, they do have both US/UK DataCenters and can put you in a server upon your choice. They have great set of techs working 24*7, price is bit high though it is worth.

So we have had a good amount of issues tonight with our server.

here are the logs from single hop in regards.

    Hello,

Right now we are utilizing the Newrelic monitoring suite, which captures system resource data over time. This allows us to see things like I/O, RAM, and CPU utilization as your server goes through these events. What they can't show is the specific cause of your overloads; Right now you are running a database heavy WordPress application on a single server, and it looks as though that application has outgrown your current configuration. Every day around 4 am your server gets a usage spike in disk I/O, which can most likely be attributed to your database accessing the disk. I have attached a screen capture of the data in question; The I/O wait created by this operation is likely causing a tremendous amount of cache to be held in RAM when the process can't wait for the disk. This will cause RAM to saturate leaving nothing but swap available, which of course is inaccessible as it's stored on your disk. Right now the most important step should be to increase your server's disk I/O availability, for which there are a few separate approaches. The easiest would likely be to offload your MySQL data to a dedicated SSD, however a load balanced multi-server configuration is going to be the most scalable and stable.

Another thing that needs to be examined would be your WordPress plugins; When Matt Doak resolved the issue recently he did so by shutting down all of your WordPress plugins. Given that this is a single server with no failover or HA capabilities running on a single disk, you may wish to implement some change control that tests new plugins under load before implementing them into your production site. WordPress plugins are well known to be unpredictable as they are cobbled together by various third parties of equally various skill levels.

The I/O seems to spike between midnight and 4 am so I will monitor the server through that period. I will update you throughout the evening with any relevant updates. As to the other issues noted in your previous response, I will ensure that our Manager is apprised of the complete situation.

    Round 2

    Hello,

Right now I am not able to confirm that the drive is going bad as the server won't stay responsive long enough after a reboot. I am seeing that a tremendous amount of threads are started from teh index page:

This is output from the "top" command, flagged to only show ACTIVE processes. Please understand that I have null-routed the main IP address, and yet this script is still running rampant. Regardless, replacing the drive wouldn't be as optimal a solution as adding a dedicated SSD for your MySQL directory. We can replace the existing drive with a new one however I should confirm the SMART data once I'm able to get the server stable before committing to doing so. Most importantly, we need to add a solid state drive that can be mounted to /var/lib/mysql such that all reads/writes to MySQL data are done via the solid state disk. Ideally you would have a pair of load balanced servers (virtual machines generally suffice) to host your web content with a dedicated MySQL machine running an SSD. This is by no means the only optimal configuration option, however splitting the work between servers isolates and compartmentalizes workload, increasing resource availability and simplifying situations such as these where we need to track down a bottleneck that is closing faster than we can get into the server.

A file system check has been forced on this latest reboot, as soon as the server comes back I should have more information for you.

seems like they are having big issues and want me to upgrade pretty big. That is a lot for a site getting 30-50k traffic a day.
