Recommended Swap Space for CentOS 6.4 64bit with 24gb RAM?

    .

Is 4gb plenty of space for swap in a CentOS 6.4 64bit system with 24gb RAM?

The installer set swap at 12gb by default, but that seemed to be overkill.

Is there any reason why I should keep it at the default 12gb? Or is 4gb more than enough?

If it makes any difference, the server will be hosting HTML & PHP websites (several vBulletin forums). CP will be Interworx.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions regarding this.

you can keep the Swap at where it currently is. There isn't exact science how much the swap can be, but usual terminology is double the RAM, but since you have 24GB RAM you may not go that far.

Personally I'd set 2 or 4GB - if you're using either heavily you're probably screwed anyway and the server is going to be grinding and unresponsive.

I suggest you about 6 GB of swap

Its a personal option. For me, 2gb is more than you need. 24gb of ram, you never will use swap.

Never say never We've got customers with 32GB plus that have dipped in to their 4GB swap before and it's saved them from crashing hard.

You do not need that high swap if you have more ram already.

4 to 6 GB should be sufficient for swap since you already have 24 GB RAM.

I second 4-6GB suggestion...because if you ever use more than that of swap space, that is the time where you should look for memory upgrade!

    2-4GB.
You really want to avoid using swap at all, so I wouldn't go overboard with it.

We install most of our dedi's with 2GB or 4GB of swap, irrespective of the amount of RAM they have. We find that's generally more than adequate, since most dedi's come with so much ram these days that dipping into swap is pretty rare.

I usually divide by 8 or so. On a system with 24GB, would most likely set 2-3GB.

Largely depends on what you're doing.

I've got some customers who run Oracle, JD Edwards, PeopleSoft and SAP who use 500+ GB of memory and require upwards of a TB of swap.

SWAP doesn't always mean performance issues, depending on the application. Big ERP applications like those utilize SWAP properly to sleep on large datasets that are not in use. So there isn't a performance hit.
