Can someone please explain the difference between Eth and Venet?
Long time reader, first time poster here!
Because of constant downtime with my current VPS provider, today, I decided to get a new VPS to be used as a Squid proxy. Please do note, that my Linux knowledge is fairly limited and I'm building this based on a step by step template given to me by a close friend.
After 'rebuilding' my Squid proxy on the new VPS I realized that no traffic was passing through Squid by taking a look at the logs. So I rebuilt the VPS from scratch twice to no avail. Finally I realized that the main difference seems to be in my network ports. Whereas I have Eth0 on my previous VPS, I've got now Venet0:0. Apparently a Postrouting rule being used does not like Venets hence the problem.
Question: Is there a way to rename/change Venet to Eth??? If not, and I decide to cancel this VPS and get another one, how can I know whether another VPS will provide Eth ports instead of Venets?
OpenVZ/Virtuozzo hosts tend to have venet interfaces although they can have eth interfaces. Xen/KVM/VMware hosts have eth interfaces.
