    Goolgle's CDN-like PageSpeed Service

    Google has started a free invite-only CDN service called PageSpeed Service.

    Anyone have the chance to use this service? If so, please share what you think. Thanks!

    We have it running on a few domains. Works easily with static content. With dynamic content you need to configure rules to identify each dynamic content which should not be cached. Anycast network. Best for those who want a quick fix without optimizing their code.

    I signed up for it yesterday. Here are the page loading times reduction/increases:

    US East Virginia = +9.2%
    Singapore = -10.9%
    Ireland = -2.7%
    Spain = -5.8%
    Australia = Waiting...

    Also, network connections went down from about 400 at a time to around 40 for about a 90% reduction.

    I'm not so worried about the US stats since it's already pretty fast. Besides, I'm not sure what the numbers will be for NY and California, where most of my visits come from.

    It looks like the performance advantage for my site is not that big. It's probably because site is static and somewhat optimized--it does not gain much from the rewrites that Google does when serving the pages.

    Will let you guys know more as I track impact on the site.

    I'm guessing these are your preliminary tests. Give it 48 hours and then test again.

    Yes, just preliminary. I'll give it more time and then I'll try again. Thanks for the advice, Indichosts!

    Reports from US nodes will improve once the caches are filled. We are getting 15-32% drops in load time from US.

    I believe it supports SSL. You can check out the FAQ.

    I didn't use with SSL because I do not have SSL on my domains. If I get more information on this, I will post here.

    Hi Everyone,

    Just an update. I just run a few test on WebPageTest. Here they are:

    US East (Virginia): Page load better (-14.4%), Speed index worse (+16.2%)
    US West (California): Page load better (-8.8%), Speed index better (-29.4%)
    Europe (Ireland): Page load worse (+3.5%), Speed index better (-20.2%)
    Australia (Sydney): Page load worse (+8.7%), Speed index worse (+8.7%)

    It's still mixed, so I don't see a very clear advantage in performance. My VPS is very quiet though--very little resources used as most of my content is served by Google. Also feeling more comfortable with the DDoS protection from Google's Project Shield.

    What tool do you use to measure that if i may ask?

    WebPageTest.org has a specially built comparative test for performance with and without PageSpeed Service (Google rewrites + proxy). When it runs, I think it requests the page several times in both contexts and looks at the averages. The summary is pretty easy to read with a nice visual comparison.

    Already tested it, but not quite good for the china visitor.
    High ping time, bad routing.

    I'm guessing Google servers are getting 'special treatment' by Chinese ISPs. Do the pages still actually load?

    Click the Sign Up button here. If you get it, you will get a reply. I got mine after several hours, so it shouldn't be too hard. Later, you will need to have verified 'ownership' of the site--I already had mine veified through Web Master Tools.
