    exim creating load

    Hello All,

We are seeing some issues with our server where we are seeing a lot of spam mail activities in the server which indeed keeps writing data to the mysql eximstats db and creates high load on the server.

Any idea how can i fix this ?

Will it help if I disable eximstats ?

Why would you be allowing outbound spam on your server?

I would presume they're lacking the skills to stop it.

the better fix is to disable all accounts that are spamming.

I guessed as much from the fact that it was eximstats causing you load, but wanted to be sure.

The answer has to be to stop the spam, not to stop eximstats. That's the last thing you want to do - you need as much data as you can get on the spam messages, and eximstats could be one of the friends you need.

So the next thing to figure out is where the spam is coming from. If you don't know where to start, you could try finding some of those spam messages in your exim log, and pasting the details here. Please change any e-mail addresses to sample ones (like [email protected]) before pasting the logs.

Out of interest, is this a shared server with other people as customers, or is it a server exclusively for your own use? That determines what you do when you've found the source of the spam.

We've found the account which is spamming and deleted the email account. Still I can see the account spamming in the logs.

There were probably spam-messages in the exim queue. Here's where it gets either inelegant or time-consuming.

You could purge the entire queue, but that would remove genuine mail. You could wait for the queue to run clear, but that may take some time. Or you could filter the messages and delete the spam ones - but that's a manual process.

    Thanks I'm now running a

exiqgrep -i -f [email protected] | xargs exim -Mf to delete the spams from that user.

How can I purge the entire queue ?

Is there a backend file i can delete to purge the entire queue of emails ?

If you're running cPanel install ConfigServer Mail Manage.

If not - you're going to have to do it manually. Google "Exim Cheat Sheet"
