I've owned several over the course of my life, the last one of which we had to have put down after fighting several years of her life with Mange

Congrats! They are definitely awesome dogs, if its a pure bread then you want to keep an eye on their skin for any signs of mange. Also German Shepard's are prone to hip issues as they get older.

I had a pure bred male shep for about 10 years. We battled with the ear flop and later he had serious hip issues. That aside, he was the sweetest and most loyal dog I have ever had. They are also incredibly easy to train, and work well with other animals.

If you haven't had one before, I would make sure you are prepared. Do you have plenty of room for him to exercise and get out?

    Re: german shepherd owners?

My parents used to have one and she was a pure breed, all of her siblings went off to be prison dogs but because she was female we had her. She had the best personality you could ever wish for in a dog and always knew when she had been naughty. If you clicked your fingers she would wait for a command and if you said Bed! Off she tootled up the stairs to the bedroom.

All the neighbours were intimidated by her because of her vast size and her loud bark but she would never harm a fly, she just barked at people for the attention. But she was especially good at protecting her home, as soon as a car pulled up outside she would go bonkers and if there was someone wearing all black with a hood or baseball cap she wouldn't let them in the house.

But overall she was a beauty and needed lots of exercise because of her over activness which is never good when it comes to bedtime and she just wants to play fight.

Used to have one when a kid, dreaming of getting one now, just realize it needs a lot of space, so it will be uncomfortable in an appartment like mine))).

    And smell, oh yes...

We had a German Sheperd for nearly 10 years. Absolutely fantastic friend.

Unfortunately, he succumbed to intestinal torsion and even though he went through emergency surgery, they couldn't save him. That was about a year and a half ago and his loss is still felt.

That said, if you have a GSD there is some preventative surgery (that we didn't know about at the time) that can keep them from ending up with stomach problems (torsional distress & bloat), talk with your vet about it. The surgery would be expensive, but well worth the peace of mind.
