A few things to keep in mind with shared hosting is that you are depending on someone else to manage and secure the system that is shared with up to 100 or more other users. With a dedicated machine you have all of the available resources the machine offers to you and you alone. If you get an un-managed then it will be entirely your responsibility to secure and maintain it. Another choice is using a VPS (virtual private server) This is where you share resources with others but you have your own OS with root access. Most VPS's dedicate CPU cores Hard drive space and Memory directly to you.

chose a good provider + backup solution and decrease risk of losing your data. vps or dedicated server comes with more resources but you will face with same issues and more because you must have good knowledge for managing your server or go with managed server.

Are you using Magento by chance? If so, I'd steer clear of shared hosting. Magento's an absolute resource hog and you'll likely find that the majority shared providers won't play very nicely with it.

Get a shared hosting and expand as you grow. Just keep a local backup of your files.

e-commerce apps tend to be resources hogs. Magento is one, as are others. For something like this, I'd suggest no less than a Stablehost or MDD Hosting enterprise/semi-dedicated plan. Either than or managed VPS, and then you MUST learn some admin skills (especially when it comes to security and caching).

I would NOT suggest standard/generic shared hosting for e-commerce.

e-commerce suggests business use. So to those that would suggest standard shared hosting, QUIT BEING CHEAP! If you want the business to thrive, use what's needed. If you try to be a cheapskate, you'll fail long-term (for hosting, and other reasons).

I wouldn't recommend traditional shared hosting for an e-commerce site. Too many vulnerabilities, it's too easy for another user on the server to hack into your content. And if it's e-commerce, are you accepting credit cards? Will you need to be PCI compliant? It's often overlooked, but even if you're using a third party vendor to host your customer's credit card info, you're still on the hook for PCI compliance if the cards are at all transmitted through your site. And it's very hard, maybe even impossible, to become PCI compliant on a shared server.

I'd recommend VPS or a dedicated box. You might even be able to get away with a properly locked down cloud, especially one that doesn't split CPU cores and dedicates resources strictly for your use, but I wouldn't go with shared on it. Shared is inexpensive but you can get a cheap VPS for $10-$15/month, so the cost isn't really that bad.

Although not recommended it is a perfect starting place to get all your content together etc. Unless you expect your shop to take off almost straight away. I would start with shared then move to a VPS Some hosts have specialist hosting packages for this.

It depends, is this eCommerce website a new business venture? is this anothr sales venue to a current physical store?

If the first, one would think that unless you are spending hordes of $$$ in adverts a shared hosting will be enough to start with.
eCommerce solution do tend to eat up allot of resources but even so if you only have a few visitors per day it wont be an issue.

On the other hand if this eCommerce website is an extension of a physical store then i would go with VPS and grow from there.
The reason the approach is different is because you would already have a client base so the changes of having a steady traffic are much higher making the Resources consumption something to worry about from the beginning.

Anyhow, this all depend on your budget. Itīs easy to tell you to go for a VPS or even a Dedicated Server when i am not the one paying the bill.

If this is your first ecommerce site, i recommend you to try shared hosting first.
VPS or dedicated server need higher server technical skill and ofcourse need more budget.

I would suggest to go for shopify, unless you are technically sound and can deal with your e-commerce store.Assuming it as one man business i recommend shopify. If you got a small team you can host e-commerce on shared hosting plan with cdn.If you have technical team to maintain vps then go for it.To sum it up it all depends on your budget and available resources. All the best.

Need more inputs from you ? Shared Hosting would be big no for a eCommerce website. Other then security issue what is your budget!?

As suggested by @in_rock, Platforms like shopify would be right for you to get started and then upgrade yourself, as and when needed.

I can say that now there are a lot of VPS offers in the market at reasonable prices. So even if you have a limited budget, you can still find a good VPS solution for you. But you will have to get some technical skills or find someone who can consult you

  14. I do recommend start with a shared hosting, you shouldn't start with a VPS or a dedicated, etc. unless you have some server management experience or you need a lot of resources, you always have time to grow and upgrade. I also do not agree with someone said shared is not secure, this depends of the server configuration and security systems running in the server....we have many users running e-commerce site for years over shared hosting without any problem, even some passed the PCI tests. Good luck!
