Question

Anyone Running WebSphere & SunOne?

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone was running SunOne Web Server for a front end with IBM's WebShere as a backend?

And if so, if it was very difficult to setup?

Why do you need 2 webservers?

2 WebServers

I should state that when I refer to WebSphere I am referring to the Application Server.

We are currently running IBM WebSphere Application Server with IBM HTTPD as the WebServer. We are also running SunOne Web Server for some other sites.

We are now looking at migrating the IBM HTTPD web sites over to the SunOne WebServer. But they would still need to talk to WebSphere Application Server.

So in a sense you are correct we do have 2 different web servers running. The goal is to get it down to 1, but we still need WebSphere Application Server on the back end.

Yes. I know what Websphere is. It covers from normal pages to jsp to servlets to EJBs. That's why I was asking why it needs an additional Sunone. But you clarified it.

One way I would think is possible is to use RMI to invoke it. But from experience that is really a lousy performance.

This is the corporate platform for the company I'm contracting for. But I have no idea as to how difficult it was to setup. We are in the process of migrating multiple platforms and technologies including IIS/ASP, Tomcat/JSP, Oracle, MS Access and a few others that were more or less integrated to this JSP split environment. In addition to the IPlanet (SunOne) webserver, and Websphere application server, we also run DB2 servers for the database backend.

To me it seems like a lot of hassle and money, but its not my money so I'm just going along for the ride. It's a good learning experience anyway. You might wanna look more into the actual migration costs. You could be talking $100,000's or $1,000,000's to migrate anything significant.

Btw, this concept of multiple servers doesn't seem to be too common on these forums from what I've noticed. Many of the hosts here have integrated systems.

Which version of SunOne are you running? If you don't mind me asking...
