Post Web hosting for a very large forum

We run a very large forum with over 7000 members and getting 100+ members every single day. We have around 1000 members on at a given time, and our forum has a lot of add-ons such as a marketplace that has tons and tons of data. We are currently hosted by GoDaddy on a dedicated server with 4GB of ram, but our server load is constantly higher than 10 and we would like other options.

Any help would be appreciated! Thank you in advance.

    Hello,

Do you happen to know what your current bottle neck is (what is causing such high load)? What is your current CPU? Perhaps SAS or SSD would be a great fit for you!

Try to optimize your server, if you don;t know how then try contacting a company such as Seeksadmin who can do it for a fee of $25/Mo. that should really help drop the load. Switching to a shared host will just make things worse... I could already picture this going down hill due to CloudLinux limitations etc.

    Hi Dustin,

We're not entirely sure what our bottle neck is. We don't use a lot of our bandwidth (maybe 0.25 TB), and our database size is around 2GB, so I'm not sure what is causing the issue. Do you know how to figure out what is causing high loads? GoDaddy support has not been very helpful.

Our server load sometimes goes up to 30, and running "top" only gives us mysqld and php-cgi as the commands running through the most CPU.

Sounds like it's something with MySQL -- have you tried hiring a third party management company? They'd most likely need to dive into your MySQL and optimize a little to improve things. Also SAS or SSD would be a good fit some a site such as yours.

You can keep that in mind while finding your next host or touch base with GoDaddy and see what they can do to assist with your MySQL bottle neck and if they can propose a new setup with faster drives.

You will probably want to look into getting a VPS.

You can either hire someone to go in and really look at your setup and optimize things and tweak your software.

Out of the box servers need proper optimization to run right. They need to be optimized to fit the software you are running. Forums and Apps. with very specific demands must have a little management now and then.

If GD isn't able to tell you why you are getting high loads I honestly think you need to find managed host that can take the time. For a real managed hosting company, they should totally have answers and solutions. This isn't rocket science, just good competent support.

I'd wager that for the price you over pay at GD you can find a smaller, caring company with good service.

Maybe the dedicated server is low spec and not powerful enough? What are the specs of the dedicated server?

You should consider using a managed high spec VPS with SAS storage in RAID 10 and have the provider optimize the services such as MySQL for you. You can also consider using LiteSpeed, Varnish or Nginx. All this should help bring the load down on the server.

Forums use a lot of database queries. You need someone specializing in MySQL optimization to bring the load down. You should also consider load balancing. I don't know what your options are with GoDaddy, but ask them if they provide private networks so that you can offload your database by having a separate server only for MySQL. That should speed things up.

@onehallyu 7000+ members is quite good.
You can start selling ad-space which will earn you enough money to move to a GOOD dedicated server. Don't shoot for a mid-range dedi.

Seems like a very large forum indeed.

4GB is surely not enough. You should look at more ram and good IO then optimize it properly.

If you are unable to determine what is causing the high load, then it is time to hire a System Admin to take a look for you.

Once you determine why it is slow, you should be able to then address the issue and improve the performance, rather than hoping someone who has no idea as to what your server is doing to offer a suggestion on how to fix it.

Honestly, if you're running into a bottleneck like this already, you need to seriously consider splitting your workload between two machines.

If you find a solid company (GoDaddy won't be it), they'll be able to get you onto decently configured systems that will split the workload (web on one, MySQL on the other) with a private backnet running at a 1 Gigabit connection. And yes, you will want to make sure that both Apache and MySQL are optimized.

People always forget what it takes to run a large site and what kind of resources you need for it. Last I looked (about 2 years ago), WHT was running on 5 web servers. Hogville (a site I Tech Admin for) has 6 web servers (though it will drop down to 4 during the slow season).

onehallyu, GoDaddy is great for smaller sites that don't consume a ton of resources and have limited budgets. You're a bit beyond their target market so it's time for you to go with people that know how to do this right.

Such a large forum cannot run on a 4 GB RAM server. Try to add more RAM to see if that helps.
