    Questions about optical attenuation

How much attenuation can be expected from a female to female (sc / sc) coupling like one used in a patch panel?

Should attenuators be placed at the RX to avoid possible reflection?

How can an attenuator be used on a single strand of LC cable if the LC connector appears to be one solid connector? (can't right?)

When fiber patch cables don't specify the connector's polish type, is it assumed the type is UPC because that's most common?

If a fiber patch cable doesn't specify that it is bend insensitive then should it be assumed is isn't?

Lastly, has anyone done the wrap around a pencil trick with fiber patch cords for a quick and cheap method attenuation?

rule of thumb is .5db per patch

most attenuators prevent back reflection so it does not really matter, most are placed infront of rx to prevent burning of optics

kinda out of luck with that one use a different patch cable.

Good question.. not exactly sure we have never ran into this problem.

no, i wouldn't advise it.. just use the attenuators

The ones we have from cables and kits don't specify the connector polish: http://www.cablesandkits.com/sc-to-s...rs-p-1630.html

However their attenuators do specify the polish: http://www.cablesandkits.com/fiber-c...2_283_419.html

They only sell UPC attenuators so should it be assumed that they only sell UPC patch cables?

FWIW - I don't see the polish type specified on our monoprice patch cables either...

fwiw.. we get all our cables from cablesys.com and our attenuators from fiberstore.com and never had any issues.. all db budgets within specifications.
