What measures to take to protect a new Cloud VPS based site ?

Hi guys. I have a new e-commerce website project in the wraps, which I'm just about to take it out of development stage, and fully launch it. I'll be moving to a well-established Cloud VPS provider in the coming days too. It will most probably be running on top of Centos 6.4 and cPanel.

I want to know, what are the obvious recommended things I can do to protect my site from hacking/malicious/DDoS attacks as much as possible ?

Also, is DDoS something a new site owner should be worried about ? I mean how real is the threat for this ?

I've been a programmer by profession, and have experience in quite some technical things, but I'm a n00b to all things related to website maintenance, etc.

You can use third party plugins like CSF firewall, MailScanner from ConfigServer, cPHulk features of cPanel/WHM to protect your server. Also, enable suPHP and other useful modules of PHP to get protection from hacking.

Will doing these things secure me from most hacking attempts ?

    And what about DDoS ?
