I suppose this change will make it easier to compare offers. All the specs will be unlimited so the only things that will matter are the brand and the price.
Usually providers add all sorts of junk to their ads on WHT. Lots of self-praise and other BS no one bothers to read. I often find myself scrolling down the thread to where the specs and prices are. I guess now it'll be even easier. The thread title alone should tell me what the brand is and what the price is. I won't even have to open the thread.
Anyway this change is only for shared/reseller hosting right? I no longer buy that. It would be something if you guys allowed unlimited VPS and dedis and colocation too. Wow that would be something.0

I have yet to see someone complain that they've had their account terminated for having too many subdomains, databases, email accounts, forwarders, autoresponders or mailing lists. On the other hand, how many people have you seen come here feeling misled after finding out that there are in fact limits to their "unlimited" space and bandwidth plan? The fact of the matter is that the things that constrain databases, subdomains, etc, are the storage and bandwidth limits that are put in place by the host and are quite clearly visible. Where do I find the true limits for hosts offering unlimited space and bandwidth? I have to go find where they've hidden it. As someone who has been in this industry I know exactly where I have to go to find the true limits. Can you expect the same of a consumer who is new to the industry?
I agree with this if the rules are going to change.
I'm getting the feeling that we're going to see a race to the bottom not too long after the rules change.Last edited by Jeff Bee; 09-10-2013 at 06:27 PM.

I went and took a quick break and got a snack and thought about this.
We are in an era where hosting companies are packing more and more accounts on less and less hardware with the help of software such as cloudlinux & betterlinux.
Here is an example of 2 very popular hosting companies on this forum and how they run their servers:
Hosting Company #1:
/dev/sda3 1.8T 1.7T 48G 98% /
root@cherry [~]# ls /var/cpanel/users |wc -l
964
root@cherry [~]#
/dev/sda5 1.8T 1.7T 74G 96% /
root@mars [~]# ls -l /var/cpanel/users |wc -l
1162
root@mars [~]#
I remember the era of 2005, and back then hosting companies had 500gb-1tb of space and a few hundred customers and they were filling up drives.
These days there are 1000-2000 accounts on a server using 1TB-2TB of space, and they are constantly filling up their hard drives.
In some ways this is going to be really exciting for us, I for see we will see an uptick in server problems which we can bill for but on the other side of things I think we are going to see an uptick in low usage innocent customers suffering due to hosting companies choices of offering unlimited hosting.
I bet we see alot of situations where people move from host to host every couple months because of some kind of TOS violation.
Dedicated server providers are probably going to love it, there is going to be an uptick in server orders with more drives / larger more expensive drives that they can charge a premium for.
I also bet... more and more hosts are going to fail to keep 'good' backups.. We deal with alot of hosts that do not keep recent backups simply because it costs them to much to do so right now.
This is going to be deja vu for me.. I've been in hosting for 10 years, and history always seems to repeat it self in hosting.
Anyone want to take bets until its banned again?Steven Ciaburri | Industry's Best Server Management - Rack911.com

Offering unlimited subdomains and email accounts is not the same as unlimited bandwidth and disk space. Find one case of this lol
Somebody must have paid a lot of money to allow this....gonna be a lot more complaint threads now that wht is allowing web hosts to lie to their potential clients.
PS: I'm not against some unlimited hosting providers. Just in general many give it a bad name.Last edited by Merged; 09-10-2013 at 06:37 PM.

WHT 2013
I don't see a reason to change the WHT rule about "unlimited" space/bandwidth. In the world of Cloud computing and Cloud Hosting "unlimited" does not exist and the web hosts charge for each and every byte. Applying restrictions to any "unlimited" offerings is even more adequate today, than it was five or six years ago. Many Shared hosts went down because of the unrealistic Promises they made to customers. So banning the use of "unlimited" proved to be wright decision.

I have to agree with other people here. Are WHT just trying to increase ad revenue? If I didn't already cancel my premium subscription, I would have done so now.

And here I thought one of the goals of WHT was to educated the customer.
I can only see this benefiting two extremes, the summer/kiddie host that charge $1/month for unlimited everything or EIG.
I agree with most... Its a bad idea...1

Does this mean infractions for those that disagree with unlimited and would recommend against it? What about all of the threads about EIG and the others that offer these services? Will bad mouthing the big money makers become a "Suspendable" offense?

Can you provide an example of how that could happen? Being against a type of offering isn't against the rules here. Praising or trashing a provider without first-hand experience is though.

Indeed i am surprised by this move.. why would you allow 'unlimited' advertisement offers ?
Then again i think more everyday folks are more tech/jargon aware in 2013 than they were back in 2005 !: CentminMod.com Nginx Installer Nginx 1.25, PHP-FPM, MariaDB 10 CentOS (AlmaLinux/Rocky testing)
: Centmin Mod Latest Beta Nginx HTTP/2 HTTPS & HTTP/3 QUIC HTTPS supports TLS 1.3 via OpenSSL 1.1.1/3.0/3.1 or BoringSSL or QuicTLS OpenSSL

The only reason I can think of allowing said operators in would be monetary. And being that "Certain companies" are some of the largest Unlimited providers, they would also be some of the biggest revenue generators. So having a bunch of users running around not recommending "them/unlimited" would be bad for the bottom line.
Not saying it is going to happen, but it is a question. Why you guys would allow such a "questionable" business practice of "Unlimited", which you haven't allowed advertising of and threatening bans for those that do for over 8 years all of a sudden?
It is your site, and your company can do whatever they think is necessary for the well being of their company, but it is my believe that you will not only anger, but alienate those that have been here for so long.
Just my two cents.Tyler S.

WTF ?!?!?!?!
I recommend WebHostingTalk.com because I have always known
- The information / advertisements will not be misleading
- The recommendations can not be simply based upon price at face value
So now you will have...
- Advertisements which maybe misleading
- Recommendations which will be seen only upon face value
And you think this is a good thing?
Allow me to give you an idea of what I and others I suspect will imagine seeing here now
Example:
- I recommend X company which offers unlimited everything for $5
- I recommend X company which offers unlimited everything for $15
- I recommend X company that offers 500 MB / 1GB for $10
Of those 3, which one is realistic? By the time someone even gets to the 3rd provider, having blown through the first 2.... They'll just assume that WHT is full of worthless recommendations.
This is not an upgrade. This is a downgrade of WHT's status.2

But the average joe might not because it appears to be the worst deal out of all of them. Everybody wants "More For My Money", and you cannot get more than Unlimited!
I would suggest making Unlimited offers have easy to read and clear fine print included in every Advertisement, just to give the consumer the clear message about what it is they are buying.Tyler S.

Give the average Joe some credit for having a brain. Unfortunately there are still gullible people out there, which is why Nigerian scammers and the like are still preying on people, but the average person can see through "too good to be true" offers, whether it be online or in real life.

The outrage over this is to be expected but the unlimited or not nothing changes. The WHT hosts that post here come and go all the time. Whether it's 1GB space, 100000GB space or unlimited the fly by night come and go. If a host who is highly recommended here went unlimited would it suddenly change the quality of their services? The answer is no
As far as the argument about unlimited emails or any other feature is not the same no one ever gets booted. I beg to differ we've had users abuse every single unlimited aspect we advertise. If you haven't seen it and you're a host you simply have not been around long enough or are not big enough.█ Tony B. - Chief Executive Officer

This is true to an extent. However the average person buying a shared hosting account knows squat about servers, so I don't really think it applies. There is a lot of people who can't even install wordpress without a script installer, those people do not possess the ability to see through too good to be true offers.
