Cheap Dedicated Server

Hi,

I am looking for a cheap dedicated server with minimal bandwidth (as it will probably only host very few sites). Anything from about 32mb RAM, pentium 166, couple of GB of hard disk space... root access, 2 IPs for name servers... linux or unix...

Web, FTP, Mail, DNS, News, Database, etc. server software would be nice but not nesecary...

Oh, based in the UK and some support / ability to upgrade would be nice but again not nesecary..

I was looking at about £30 per month..

Many Thanks for your help!

Andrew.

I think 30 pounds is about $45...and i dont think you will find a dedicated server,no matter how crappy it is for 45$ a month...maybe 45$ a DAY...

you could go with UK2.NET. they sell a RaQ3 with 64 MB RAM and a 10GB HDD, 10GB Transfer for £25 per month - they charge a high setup fee though and they DO NOT provide support unless you purchase support hours (again a very high price).

You also have to pay that £25/per month in one large 3 year advanced payment with UK2. So you'll be paying £900 + £199 setup = £1099. If you're certain you're gonna love UK2's service and will need a RAQ3 server for 3 years then it's a really great deal!

Hi,

Thanks for your reply. Well, I did think of uk.net but it was the high set-up price and the lack of support that put me off !

Thanks anyway,
Andrew.

Hm... one possible solution is ths so called "private server" which basically is just a shared account (shared with much less people per server). Freevsd.org develops such software that will allow several "private servers" to be set up under one server, each private server will function as a full dedicated server (with its own "root"access, apache, sendmail, etc... etc... ).

What exactly are you looking to do with the server? selling accounts, or just host your domains/sites? If you don't mind with a server located in US, I might be able to help you out, either be it under virtual dedicated server (a server shared at most only by 8 other accounts) or wait until I install freevsd (and then test it) on my servers...

cheers,

no doubt that freevsd is a good tool, but there are still a number of problems with it and I would not advice anyone to use it in a production environment until things are more stable. read through the archives at freevsd.org and see what are the problems many users are facing, esp with frontpage extensions and the web-based control panel. *freevsd is not ready for rh 7.1*

Hi,

A shared server might be nice, however, it was more for testing ideas and programming - hence, I may have a tendency to crash the server. As this is a semi-hobby I don't want to have to pay out lot's of money... but I think a dedicated server is my only option... Though I have thought about co-location in Britain - yet it still all seems so expensive!

Thanks for your help though,

Kind Regards,

Andrew.
