this forum is great but its not really a "busy" forum. to me 500 people online is pretty normal.
however vbb is not designed to handle a "real" busy forum (1000+ online). there are still too many database queries. so this forum has 2b hosted on a really good server (dual xeon i think) or 2 servers with one being database server.

"The new configuration will be 4 Dual XEON SCSI 2 GHZ machines on the front end with a like machine on the SQL data base. A seperate Dual XEON machine will run the directories."
Okay that's exactly from head surfer. I think all the servers have either 2 gigs of ram or 4 gigs. I'm not sure though.Terry Myers - t(at)onapp.com

dude, in terms of system recourses, vbb does not even come close to the world's fastest forums.Originally posted by inogenius

one of them is called fastboard can be found at http://www.fastboard.org
it has 5 mysql queries on its index page.
another one, yet the world's fastest one is called Discuz. (discuz.net) too bad its only in chinese. and yes it has every function that vb does and even more. and its main index page has as few as 4 mysql queries. (6 if some functions are on).

look if u cannot read chinese its going 2b hard to let u understand. these forums are not going to list 2000 users on the page. it does not sound pratically does it? they are devided into many many sections with different topics(like wht's general forum, advertising forum, etc). so if i give u a link now it means nothing to u. but please do not doubt the existence of such forums. there are a lot of them. and they produce 100000+ postings easily per week.

You can't only go by users online - you have to look at actual activity.
You can have 1000+ users online - all of them just reading. WHT is probably one of the most active forums in terms of posts (I think). At times, WHT is more like chatroom, which is probably why there are 4 servers - nothing worse than the servers being overloaded when there's a good thread to post in

Okay, Processed in 0.008694 second(s), 5 queries.
There may be only 5 queries, but there's no where near as many features. It doesn't look very nice either.
BTW I'm pretty sure mySQL would crash before 4,000 users could be on a forum at one time.Terry Myers - t(at)onapp.com

ha, on the feature side, it doesn't offer as much as VB, but most functions are there.
these forums softwares are specifically written to handle large forums, so some unnecessary features are not offered.
how is look depends on the design, you can easily modify it using html.
"BTW I'm pretty sure mySQL would crash before 4,000 users could be on a forum at one time."
I don't agree, they are very stable for me.

I never meant it in a literal way. My point was that you can't base anything on JUST # of users online - you have to look at user activity tooOriginally posted by qm8309

LOL! if u dont understand chinese how ur going to know wut features it has? haha let me put it this way. it has basically every function of vb. its "looking" can be defined freely by a complete dedicated template system. in terms of efficiency vbb cannot be compared to that board. there is simply no comparison. and yes this board can hold 5000 users online easily with a dual xeon.Originally posted by inogenius

Who says I don't understand chineese? I'm multi-lingual buddy... with the help of altavista.
Although I can speak English and Spanish without the help of altavista. I can do the alphabet in sign language too.Terry Myers - t(at)onapp.com

Regardless, in the end, WHT loads much faster for me than that site with 7000 users which was processed in 0.00xxx seconds.

hey balah, fastboard rocks. but Discuz is actually better than fastboard. it has even fewer database queries and more functions and lots of hacks. its kinda new tho but its growing really fast. it has more bugs that need 2b fixed.Originally posted by blaha

I am using it, bought the commercial version for $100

it's very fast! fastboard's development is kinda stopped, and they probably not going to produce chinese version anymore, cause the pirates, u know.
Discuz is going to rule the forum world!

OK, that was not the subject ))
Also, i agree that activity counts too. Im sure that WHT is like chat, somebody said that here before. I like WHT more than any forum ;-)
Im also sure that forums having more than 4000+ users will crash mysql. It's too much database queries.
