Allowing Unlimited/Unmetered on WHT
*This is a public poll. Users can see who voted and how.
It's time again for this debate.
WebHostingTalk.com has maintained a storied tradition of not allowing unlimited diskspace and bandwidth offers (hereafter referred to as Unlimited).
That decision was made when Unlimited was new and often fraudulent.
However, with advances in technology, user needs, and the proven longevity of providers offering Unlimited, I'd like to entertain the possibility of allowing those offers on WHT.
The last time we talked about it, some 2 1/2 years ago, a majority of members were OK with allowing Unlimited.
What do you say about it today?
In the last thread, there were a few mentions of, "Only if [blank]". If you propose such an option in this poll, please consider that any limitations placed on Unlimited providers will need to be placed on Limited providers.
Let the discussion begin.

They should 100% be allowed! Reason being because even thought technically it's not "UNLIMITED" if they have the space available in the hardrive and there is no limitations then let it be, but I'm pretty sure these providers will have their restrictions.

As long as advertisers clearly mentions their hidden limit on their posts , should not be any issue.

I voted no because I believe it is misleading as a prominent selling point. I can't see any good in making the advert reader believe resources are limitless and burying restrictions in the ToS/AuP.

As soon as an unlimited hard drive becomes available on Amazon, I will happily vote yes. Until then, advertise your plan restrictions on the plan page and not in the Terms.

It tends to be unlimited as long as you keep within your inode/cpu/memory limits. HostGator, an unlimited host, has a 100k/250k inode limit just like several limited hosting companies.
If you have a 50GB disk plan elsewhere and run afoul of your inode limit before you hit 50GB, you're not getting the 50GB you paid for either.

My vote is No.
I'm fine with Unlimited hosting in certain cases where it's offered the right way as opposed to the wrong way. Hosts like HostGator and DreamHost I'm fine with because their CEOs actually explain to you their limits and what "unlimited" is, but the majority of unlimited hosts are just fly by nights on a reseller account with 5GB disk space.
Right
Offering unlimited hosting when you have more than one server that you lease or own and you have plenty of bandwidth/hard drive space from your provider or unmetered bandwidth.
* and no overloading
Wrong
Offering unlimited hosting on a 5GB disk space super alpha reseller account and hiding your severe limits in terrible, unprofessional English within your ToS.
There are so many people coming in here day in and day out posting threads like "I want unlimited reseller hosting!!!! I found this host on google and there offer unlimited disk space and bandwidth reseller for $2.. should I take it??"
If we make the move to allow Unlimited hosting offers, I'm almost certain that scam report threads, terrible performance threads and complaint threads will be posted on a every other day basis, and we definitely don't want that.Last edited by GreenValueHostGM; 02-09-2013 at 04:42 PM.

My Vote is NO. You shouldn't allow it. Like others have said. It doesn't exist. And hosts offering unlimited disk space and bandwidth often and Sometimes lead to a terrible experience for the client.
Most clients will never use all the provided disk space and bandwidth they are provided. (And most times 1GB Disk space is more than enough)
I have a forum that's been online for a year as of yesterday that's got 643 posts and 170 threads.
The total disk space for that forum comes in at 46MB. Yep and that's including the emails I have on the server for that site as well.
I'd say continue to disallow the Unlimited Offers.
Great post. Totally agree with you Jon.

I voted no. I've always been against advertising "unlimited" everything. I would be for it if the ads were made to look like this:
Unlimited disk space (100GB max)
Unlimited monthly transfer (5TB max)
Unlimited Love (4 hugs or 1 kiss (on the mouth) max)Aaron Wendel
