Don't do it for hosting, don't do it for domain registration.
You ask to upgrade your account and you get back a speedy reply of "Yes! You can do that." Just click on cancel your old account (uh where exactly is that, I can't find it anywhere on your pages) and order the new one. So, you order the new one and then you hear nothing, and your account looks like it's going to be charged more for extra disk space for the month instead of them taking the time to legitimately upgrade the account when asked.
See also under domain registration.

You're just scratching the tip of the iceberg with this one. I would avoid anything that guy is involved with, and he certainly would not get any of my credit card information.
I used to work support for them a while back, and when you see people paying for services and not hearing anything for a month it doesn't take long to see where the real issues are...
Good luck in finding a new host, this is a great place to look....

Watcher, what is your name? I used to have an account with them a *long* time ago. You wouldn't happen to be Charles would you?
I was very happy with them, but that was back in at least 1999. From the sounds of things, they've changed a lot.

Well, I hope I found another decent one, that I found through here, affordablehosting, and have written to them about the domain registration issue, telling them that they can allow me access to what's mine and what I've paid for, or I will turn it over to the attorney general under the fraud statutes.
Wish I had looked a bit more before going with them (JEG).

I think the Charles that you refer to has moved on to Invision Power Services Coach. I was only there for a few months before I realized I didn't want to be a part of things there.
I remember people paying for hosting and a forum set up and not getting it for weeks. It was only when they threatened legal action or chargebacks was their hosting account even opened. I left because I wasn't about to lie to these people when they started getting ticked off. On the contrary I would scream and yell on their behalf in the hopes something would get done.
Ultimately nothing did and I left...

the scary thing is many people stuble across these kind of hosting companies without doing any research on the company itself. the people that use these forums are only a tiny fraction in the hosting newbies around today. thats why people are continually being ripped off.
i know there are checks people can do to see if a hosting company is good or not, but the truth is noone can ever be too sure.

Don't blame you there. It's too bad that the company went down the tubes like it did. I remember speaking to John Jarvis a couple of times when I was with them and back then they were pretty much on the ball. I only ended up leaving because they didn't offer php and mysql at the time (back when vBulletin was just coming out and I moved from UBB to them).
It was the InvisionBoard thing that brought my attention back to them after all this time. Since that happened, I don't think I've seen one positive comment about JEG.
Sounds like you did the right thing. It's good to know that there are people out there that won't compromise their values for a paycheck.

First of all, I appreciate the feedback I've gotten from all of you. I do, however, have another question.
Is it customary to have a folder called Admin, for which you have no permissions? The reason that I ask is this.
I had done a recent cosmetic change to my website, nothing really more of content, purely cosmetic, so the size really shouldn't have changed outside (at the max I would guess) the realm of 1 MB.
I was also hosting an ikonboard, which was rarely used.
When I received the notice that I was nearing my disk limit (25 MB) of course, my first response was to upgrade. Thus, I wrote an e-mail inquiring about upgrading, to which I received a response "Yes! You can do that. Just cancel your current account and order the V50 plan. When you order it, make sure you note that your account already exists and that you are just upgrading your account." However, I was never able to find a link anywhere that would allow me to cancel my account. Instead, I filled out a new order, and made a note of it in the comments section. After no response for two days, I went to PayPal and immediately canceled my subscription and then wrote them an e-mail stating that I had to notify them via e-mail since I couldn't find the link to cancel my account.
Shortly thereafter, I deleted the entire ikonboard, yet my disk space continued to remain at over 12 MB.
I just uploaded my entire site to my new host, and discover that it rings in at under 3 MB.
Is it theoretically possible that files were placed in this Admin folder (to which I had no access) that were inflating my disk usage without my knowledge? This would, in effect, throw my services over the 25 MB (before I deleted the ikonboard) and leave me with the extra disk usage charge, without ever being able to contest it.

Could be that they you had services added to your account that adds disk space. For example, we have web based email and a few other things that add to a customer's account space.
However, I offset this by giving more space. So, if a customer signs up for a 100 MB plan, they actually get 115 MB of space to offset the standard features of a plan that takes up space on their account.
Depends on how their servers are set up, but I'm going to guess that the admin folder you see actually has stuff like your site configuration files in it, which if edited could mess up your account settings.
Could also be that the admin folder has your logs and such as well, which some hosts count towards disk usage.

Thanks, Coach. I did see log files in other folders, mail (my site is really puny -- truly), but really couldn't see where all that disk usage was coming from.
At least you're doing what's (in my estimation) fair. I don't know what the common industry practices are in that regard. But I suppose in the end it pays off by continued service and future referrals, both of which they lost from me.

I really haven't seen any standard as far as this one goes. It truly varies from host to host. Your best bet would be to email any potential host with a pre-sales question that pertains to this. As a matter of fact, I've never even seen a host that makes mention of this on their website, including my company. I suppose it's just not a question that comes up very often to companies, but a pleasant surprise for anyone that signs up.
