Question cachcade - are there any "software only" type solutions?

    Hello,

We have a customer on an older server who wants to reduce the amount of disk io wait time, so we're trying to figure out what options they have.

The server has two 7200 RPM drives in RAID 1 (with a hardware Adaptec controller). The chassis support up to 4 drives. Two are used by the RAID1 disks, and another is used by the backup drive.

So what we are thinking is to put a 128gb or 256gb SSD into the remaining slot, and then use it as a disk cache. (The controller only supports SATA2, but that's still pretty good...)

I know cachcade works pretty well, but I don't know if there is anything else that is software based which does not require purchasing a new RAID controller.

    Any suggestions or ideas?

    Thanks!

If you use php have you considered an opcode php cacher such as eaccelerator?

Do you know what is using the IO? You might be able to optimize or configure that specific app to be more efficient or even offload some of the IO to RAM.

I think you misread the post .

@OP, take a look at flashcache (Developed by facebook) or bcache.
