Warning To Webhosts/aol Users!

Hello,

I had a signup today for a domain "aolrecover.com" .. the information on the signup matched the domain name at this time.. however the country code was from brazil.

Beyond that I went to the domain, and it closes itself and opens a 'new' window with what APPEARS to be an america online page.. except its really on their site.. and it requests your member information and credit card information.

do NOT fall for this.. and ofcourse, please don't host this guys.. I have contacted AOL's legal department and reported the issue.

Sad that some people will fall for it though.

Yes.. sad that people fall for it, and even worse that people do it..

I know ignorance exists.. but that doesn't mean people should take advantage of it like this.. These people the scum of the earth, IMO.

lots of people fall for the scammers, for instance on MSN messenger there is a warning about never passing credit card info over messenger. but there are thousands of fraudulant cases every month.

We used to have a ton of those fake AOL pages show up on our free service, somebody would create one of these sites in a matter of minutes and start spamming aol users to it. Ofcourse the spam complaints alerted us to it and they were deleted and reported to AOL. It's been ages since I've seen this scam now, thank goodness, but as long as there are gullible people out there, I guess they'll keep trying elsewhere.

the domain "aolrecover.com" does actually send you to a legitamate aol.co.uk page. have they changed that or was this what you were letting us know about.

yeah, its a shame alot of aol users dont know any better. This happens all the time. Aol needs to clean house and get rid of all the exploits they have let go for so long...for instance, spam, spam instant messages, password crackers.....only good thing about aol is that its hard to get a virus from their email. Other then that, it sucks

Hay, don't tar all AOL users with the same brush
I'm in the UK, we don't have cable and our exchange will never be ADSL enabled (90 people registered interest, no trigger level).
Because of this I'm on dial-up.
AOL is actually the only company that offers a flat rate monthly connection with no restrictions.
No maximum number of hours a month and no getting cut off every two hours.

Unfortunately I have to use their software to dial-up to the internet, however thankfully once I'm connected it is minimised and I use IE & Outlook for web & e-mail.
We aren't all twelve years olds on AOL you know

Hrm.. they changed it .. I wonder if AOL contacted them.. It used to pop up their site, which was null.. close it, and then open an aol look alike site that had a hidden address bar, but by viewing the source you could see it posted to aolrecover.com.

This one was simple. AOL probably called the registrar, said "We need to make some changes to our domain - look, we own it, we're listed as the contact."

I don't think you can do that without providing user cradentials. Such as user/pass for the domain name. Otherwisw I would call and say I owned AOL and have them change the NS to mine.
