please help.. locating a file php.ini

I need to turn register_globals = On but I can't find php.ini
So where can I find this file???
I tried locate but it doesn't show any fgood (just return php.ini-dist in the sources folders)

my phpinfo.php is at:
http://nmluan.com/phpinfo.php
And there's no php.ini in /www/conf/

There's no php.ini in /usr/local/lib/ either. Actually there's 1 I guess from the previous installation but changing that files doesn't help. I rename that file and php still runs fine. Just no register_globals (I did restarted apache)

I have previously compiled/installed php and apache couple times before on the same machine, I've just upgraded to php4.3.1 (from 4.3.0) and overwrite everything.

Please please help..

If you're doing a fresh install you have to copy it to the correct location yourself.

If you're on a Linux/Unix system, try the command "locate php.ini" on the command line. If that doesn't give you any results, it's probably because the system administrator forgot to copy the php.ini file to the correct place when he/she installed PHP.

You can do it yourself: In the PHP source directory (the one you get when you unpack the source downloaded from php.net) there are two php.ini-* files. They differ in terms of settings, so you should read the text at the top of both of them. Then, when you've decided which php.ini-* file to use, just copy that file to /usr/local/lib:

cp /some/path/php-4.3.1/php.ini-recommended /usr/local/lib/php.ini

alright.. this is my box so all the previous compilation/installation was done by me.

I tried both /usr/local/lib and /etc/ there's php.ini file in /usr/local/lib/ but changing this file (even renaming it) doesn't change anything.

Right now, PHP is running fine, you can open my site and see.. But I just can't change the configuration at all.

This is really messed up..

Please, there MUST be a php.ini file for php to run right? if so how in the world I can't find it?? ((

find /directory -name php.ini

Where directory equals the directory that you are looking in.

It has to be in /www/conf

PHP can't be reading php.ini from one directory but saying it's in another.

do the locate and see if you can find any...

Btw, after you make changes in php.ini did you restart apache?

do a

service httpd restart

for the changes to take effect.

Smile solved..

The php.ini are supposed to be in /www/conf (where phpinfo() reports) but since there's no php.ini in that location PHP runs with default settings. Yes, PHP still runs. When I manually put my php.ini there it works right away.

So I was right, PHP can run without php.ini, && there's no php.ini on my system that I don't know of..

thanks a lot guys, food for thoughts.
