If you're looking for one-way satellite internet in Europe: Starspeeder. The main site is www.starspeeder.lu, they operate with country distributers. If you are living in the Netherlands, or in Belgium (like me), you are unfortunate enough to only be able to order through Hertzinger, which basically means that you can't order at all.
Another ISP via satellite (one-way) is Europe Online. They were really good at startup, with speeds of up to 3 Mbps (which was absolutely great for only $15 a month), but then they started overloading the satellite and speeds are now under 28,8k modem speeds.
Two-way satellite in Europe is still very non-existent. The ones that offer it are very unclear about everything, and the ones that will offer it won't be here until early 2002, at the very least.

do you mean with this ''... the ones that will offer it ...'' <<DSL SATT>> (from Freenet.de & Gilat) ? [For more Information about it go to http://www.freenet.de/freenet/tarifa.../sat_dsl/index (in German)] ?

Just checked it out, and they look very promising indeed. The download speed would be 1mbit, and upload would be 150kbit. I think the cost in USD would be roughly $80/month.
What I'd like to know however is: will they be available in Ireland, where I live? Or will this be available in Germany only?

I'm also curious to know if local weather conditions would affect satellite transmissions...

oh..not only that.... I'm worry about the lag time going to places. Is that going to be affected or not.
With an ordinary fiber line .. or copper wire... the packet going straight to the gateway. Now ..with satellite .. it goes up to lala land up there.. then down to the gateway .. hmm... that's a lot of travelling time before it actually hit the gateway. I figured losing about hmm.. what .. maybe 5 sec there already .. hehe..

Actually I have sprint broadband (wireless) and dish network TV + dish network internet at home. None of them have been affected ever by weather. Packet lose and lag is not noticed at all, in fact you would never know there isn't a hard line hooked up. I use sprint for most things and dish network as a backup.

The connection will be just as good as a land line, probably even better. And the lag time is less than half a second, and on the internet, you don't notice such things. You have to keep in mind that your request has to travel 36,000 kilometers up in the sky, and then go down to the earth station 36,000 kms, then the answer has to go up from the earth station 36,000 kms, and come back down to your place 36,000 kms. As you can see, a lot of distance covered just by going through the air. Kind of neat, I think.
Anyway, I've done some more research last night after reading and posting here, and have found out the following: broadband 2-way satellite is available in the US, currently upload 150k and download up to 1 Mbps. It will be available in Europe (all over Europe, it's satellite) at the end of this year, at speeds of up to 2 Mbps down and 256k up. You can already get these things, but they are too expensive, they are geared towards ISPs looking for a backbone connection. However, the consumer market is coming. By the end of 2002, beginning of 2003, we should be able to use our dish to surf at speeds of up to 45 Mbps (!!!!!!!) and an upload speed of up to 2 Mbps (!!). For me, satellite is the future, as my local phone company isn't able to provide ADSL (1,7 km too far) and the cable won't be here until next year. So, I'm getting quite angry with Belgian ISPs, and that is why I don't want to have anything to do with them anymore in the future.
