How many clients...
How many clients did you get when you use a reseller hosting or how many do you have now with reseller hosting? Also, at which point would you upgrade to a VPS?
I am asking quite a few questions but I am just planning the future so if I do decide to open a web host, I will have a business plan ready.

It can vary. I've seen some reseller accounts that have about 200-300 accounts, whereas some only have 15-20.
Basically it depends on how much you charge and how hard you market your services.
If they are low usage accounts, a reasonable figure per reseller account would be 50-100 max. You don't want to put all your eggs in one basket so you'd want to add additional reseller accounts as you go long.Moolay.com - No-Nonsense Web Hosting!

If you already have many clients lined up for hosting, you may want to use VPS directly. Otherwise if just starting out, use basic shared hosting and then monitor performance. Use a host that will make it easy to make the jump to VPS so as not to interrupt customer web sites.

The minute you decide to sell reseller accounts is the one you should opt for a VPS. Otherwise you would have to rely on master resellers and that's rarely good for service quality.

We have a hosting company, too and have hundred and hundred customers. But we don't host domains more than 79 under a reseller hosting. So we have a lot of reseller hostings.

There is no predefined limit for reseller accounts. The size of your packages and the point to which you are willing to over-sell are the primary factors as far as physical limits. Being realistic is important also, putting 300 accounts on a $20 /month hosting package doesn't make much sense for you or your provider. As DHCart mentioned, the upgrade path doesn't necessarily need to include VPS. You could go 1 Reseller >> 2 Resellers >> Dedicated etc.

Keep in mind that a VPS is not necessarily always going to be considered a performance upgrade from a shared reseller account. I'd say one of the most common reasons why resellers decide to switch over to VPS is because they want more control over the their platform (root access).
I think the best plan is to sit down and figure out what a solid VPS will cost you, along with a dedicated server. I say this because there are many web hosts that will oversell services to you (claiming to offer you, lets say 500GB of diskspace for $20.00 per month). However if you look at dedicated server offerings, you will notice that for a bare minimum server configuration (with Raid and a decent processor, 500GB Drives) is going to run you around $200-$400 per month).
Many web hosts who start out usually get caught with their pants down, when making the move from Reseller Shared, to VPS/Dedicated because they are unaware of the actual cost of web hosting (due to false advertising by their previous/current web host).Looking for an awesome VPS Offer? CLICK HERE

The number of accounts you can create on a reseller hosting really depends on the resources allocated to you. It also depends on what packages you plan to offer to your customers, and if overselling is allowed or not, or if there is already a limit on the number of accounts you can resell.
Secondly, if the company from where you purchased the reseller allows you more and more resources, I can see no reason why you would want to shift to a VPS. True that a VPS allows you more control, and more power, but VPS would actually be more expensive considering you add perks like Litespeed Webserver, R1soft backups, Softaculous etc. to it. In the reseller hosting, you get these addons for free.

Reseller hosting is always a good place to start, it's very cheap to get started and if things start to go wrong you have a support team to help you out. As for the number of clients it really depends on the customers sites, how much of the servers resources each site uses - you could have a few hundred customers or just 25 depending on the size of the reseller package and if overselling is enabled or not. As for VPS I would only consider moving to a VPS if you want more control over the server.

To be honest. I would start out with a vps server straight away. You have more control over your hosting business and you save the hassle on upgrading to a vps or dedicated later on.
Get some billing software, and a website template. It will be worth it in the long run.

It all depends on the space you're provided with and what you charge for your services. There's no set amount of clients you can host on a Reseller Account (Unless of course your host sets a limit) .
