Sphera Replacement

I currently have an account with Westhost, running on their old Sphera platform. It has been declared end of life and so I need to find a replacement.

I like the fact that it offers 'root like' access and I can do everything via SSH. I use the GUI interface for things like configuring domains and email simply because of the way it interacts with their DNS servers. I dislike cPanel as I find it too restrictive.

Unfortunately (for me) the price is keen and I realise that I will have to pay more for any replacement.

  • I am looking for a solution where I can host multiple, small domains.
  • I would like the provider to handle OS Upgrades and backups, while I keep the apps up to date.
  • I would like a UK host.
  • I need 20GB disk space
  • I would rather a smaller host with good support

Any suggestions warmly welcomed.

So far I have looked at the following VPS providers
FutureHost - possible
Rackspace - possible
Linode - possible
[KnownHost - only US based]
LeaseWeb - no backup option

Any others I should consider? Should I be considering a shared host instead? I hope to be installing SugarCRM or CiviCRM soon on one of my domains.

Thanks for your thoughts

So you are looking for an unmanaged VPS? You might want to include your budget (otherwise you will be asked at least 4-5 times by web hosts hoping to gain your business).

I currently pay $9 pcm, which is unbeatable.

I expect that I will have to pay $30 pcm eg Linode 512 + backup = $24.95 pcm

It looks like you would likely want at least a semi-managed VPS, as an unmanaged host won't keep the OS or services up to date for you.

Which VPS plan do you currently have with WestHost? One of the easiest ways to find a new provider is to take your current specifications and use them as a base to find a new provider.

I would recommend looking in the Offers Forums within WHT to find the best Reseller Package or VPS as suggested.
