What's the best linux distro for webhosting?
Hi,
I have a webshosting service which offers windows hosting. I want to be able to offer webhosting for the linux platform.
I have one question:
What's the best "current" linux distribution for webhosting?
CentOS? Ubuntu? Mint? Debian? other???
Which one would better handle large loads of websites/hits?
Thanks you all in advance

Hello CentOS and other RedHat based distros seem to be the industry standard as cPanel/Plesk/etc are all compatible.
Personally I am a huge fan of Debian Based Distros, especially for desktops.

It's basically CentOS but more stable, will only take a few minutes to upgrade.
I recommend to read up on CloudLinux before you decide.

Been using Centos for a long time and loving it. But I have been told Cloud Linux is quite good. Am trying to test it.

No, there is a licensing cost for CloudLinux. It is ultimately worth every penny as it allows you to increase server density without impacting customers.

We use CentOS+CloudLinux on all servers. Works great.

No, you still need to purchase cPanel or another hosting control panel. CloudLinux works VERY well with cPanel.

CentOS is my personal favourite and seems to be the most popular.

There are plugins also that you can use to manage/monitor cloudlinux LV containers in WHM. (resource usages and such)

CentOS if you want to conform to the majority "standard".
That said, we host sites for a few clients using Slackware.

The most popular control panel is cPanel, and cPanel needs CentOS. CloudLinux is based on CentOS, and also with well with cPanel. Ubuntu does not work with cPanel, so you cannot use Ubuntu if you want to use cPanel.

CentOS is the most popular but it really comes down to what you work best in. Every distribution has their pros and cons.
If you want more stable go CentOS but expect to patch security holes manually at times.
Fedora is more bleeding edge pushing updates faster and soon.
Debian can make for a pretty solid system.
Mint/Ubuntu are more Desktop based distributions.

I've previously used cPanel on Centos with 1h's Hive. It's software isolated accounts. I've noticed such an improvement with my cloudlinux tests so far it's not even funny. I voted other here to represent CloudLinux because it's really it's own os with it's own webhosting designed updates. It's updated more often and with updates that are tested and that work well for a hosting environment.
I'm very impressed with CloudLinux. For $12-15 bucks a month per server it's amazing.
