I just heard from a large carrier that Internap has not gotten there lease re-signed at 111 8th ave in NYC and will be forced to move there data center out of the building by 2014 within the next 24 months. Is anyone else aware of this?

Hello,
24 months is a long way out, it gives plenty of time to negotiate a new lease or plan a move. If they do indeed choose to re-locate, I am sure that customers will get several months notice of the move.

they are in there on a sublease through 2024 from Sprint, so it may be that your carrier's info is off by a few years...

well, if Sprint says they're pulling the plug on them, the plug will get pulled...
probably a win for everyone - they'll save a mint in power costs alone by moving out of the city.

111th 8th aka the google building now isn't renewing ANY leases unless they are contractually obligated to in their lease agreement aka they have no choice but to accept. They are kicking everyone out, it might take 20 plus years but they are doing it.

Wow... isn't this surprising Google taking something else over!
However 2 years is a lot of time to get clients moved to another facility.

True, but then on the other hand.. They will most likely need new space somewhere.. that means setting up, gettin a backbone network setup on the new location, gettin all sorts of things sorted out. That all takes a lot of time so the 2 years might go by quicker than you think - trust me, i'v seen these transission with the attitude "oh well, we got plenty of time to do this" ending up with "oh ****, we gotta be out in 2 months and we just moved 25% of our gear!"

So what does this mean for so many providers in the greater NYC / NYC Metro area who connect to providers at 111 8th ave...will they be forced to now pick up carriers from 60 Hudson as the only other *big* carrier hotel in NYC?
Im curious as to why Google would do this...cause last I heard they are not planning to put any big infrastructure in that building due to power costs, is it just because they want the office space for their own expansion?

So here is my understanding of it. You are correct in they do need the office space. They however will not give up the meet me rooms were all the carriers connect because that is a huge value to Google and they want the connectivity there. Colo space however will be pretty much limited to a select few and there footprints will need to shrink down or routed to other carrier hotels like 60 Hudson. There are a few colo providers there with alot longer leases as mentioned by Kevin.

Long leases on Dark Fiber (Or even IRU) , cheap waves and datacenter space & power does make a lot of sense for the Buyer. I know that many on this forum think otherwise, but we usually lock in vendors for 5 or 10 years on Space & Power as well as XCs, 3 to 5 years on Waves and 10 to 20 years on Dark Fiber. In the Colocation market, short leases (12, 24 months) usually means that you need to accept renewals at much higher rates, then you initially paid. You even risk being kicked out completely if a larger party needs all the space or if the datacenter gets bought by a competitor or party, that needs a lot of space.
