Looking for suitible hosting/space for musician site
Hi, i have been looking for a while and pondering my solutions i have a website at Rixsta dot co dot uk, that im running from my home pc at the moment what i need is somewhere to host my site but also sience this is a music site i would be having a lot of FLAC album downloads avalible and previews of the songs, perhaps to purchase or just for free. so in time i can see myself using atleast 100gb of space as ive been making songs since 1999.
My second question is if anyone knows a good site for backing up data, i have atleast 250gb of data that i would like backed up somewhere (out there) ie the website or webserver would be nice, but aparently most hosters dont like the idea of files being "stored" on the servers altho most of those files are the same songs/files i would be sharing in time. having to back up here on DVD's is ok but i wanted a place to put all my music out there. im not bothered if its shared hosting, vps or whatever.
Also if anyone knows of any programs or anything that could help me build this site and get it sorted/popular.
any help apreciated
Riki

For the amount of disk space you plan on using I would suggest a VPS or higher. There aren't many shared hosting providers who will let you store files for download on their server due to the amount of resources your account would consume.
As for the backup solution, it would probably be best to get a second VPS or small server.
Are you looking for a hosting in the UK only? (Judging by your site being .co.uk)

You may want to look into a dedicated backup service for backups like bqbackup.com and a dedicated server for your website and songs.
How much space are using now?

What sort of traffic do you expect - if there's not going to be a lot of traffic and it's just the storage that is high, I don't see you having a problem finding shared providers that could accommodate you for the first requirement. For the backups, have you looked into stuff like Dropbox/Carbonite?

You will need dedicated server with your requirements. For backup, you can consider the cloud drive as mentioned from BitDash.

56mb, but you see none of the songs are on the site! they are in the form of torrents for "lossless" audio and links to lastfm dot com for the mp3's (lasfm re-encode mp3s making the sound quality worse), the bandwidth would be the one off user downloading the albums to which they may download from 500mb to 10gb in one turn then not need to download anymore once they have all my live recordings.
Ive looked into Dropbox its interesting i was thinking of something like dropbox but with direct links that i can add to my site. essentialy using the backup not just as storage but with some of it shared on my site for people to download. perhaps by paying.
I know this is all a lot to to take in, so thankyou for your help, the options youve shared look great so will now research into the servers. VPS and dedicated.
Thanks

It would matter if users are downloading content from the server. For example if most of your users are from the UK, you would want to try to get a server as close to the UK as much as possible so your end users can receive the best download speed.
However, if most of your users are scattered all over the world it wouldn't matter much where the server is located.

You could always host your files on something like Amazon S3 or Dropbox, one thing that I can't stress enough is to read the Terms of Service for any host you're considering. You may see the word unlimited plastered everywhere but they usually have resource limits in place.

We have some experience in this area- and usually our clients use youtube/bandcamp/soundcloud or some other service to host the actual music files as it saves a lot of money.
Amazon S3 has a free tier for storage (for the first year) if you want to host the files somewhere like that.

It is important how much back up do you need. If you can keep the back up less than 1 TB you might find low cost File hosting service. Using one of those "free" back up accounts is also an option, but you do not get any guarantees! As far as for the web hosting account, you might be fine with a Shared Hosting, but you need to post more information about the resource usage. Do you have any stats?

I agree with the others .... it would be best to choose UK location if your visitors are mainly from the UK as your visitors from the UK will be able to download the music from your site faster then, due to less hops, lower latency, and better routing.
You could start with a VPS + offsite backup account. As for music software, check out Jamroom ( www.jamroom.net)
PS your current site looks good.
All the best.

Why not use cheap/shared hosting to host to website, and have external links to a different "storage" server?

My tavels have taken me to Kimsufi, pretty much am thinking ill go with them now. "Kimsufi 2G" is absolutely perfect for me.
i dont think there are any Dedicated server competitors in this price range ?

Do you realize how pathetic slow Celeron/Atom is?
Do you understand that cheap servers use single desktop-grade drives?
Do you know how to fully managed your own server?
Plus this falls short of your desire to have 250GB backup space.
