Optimising my game server

I have a linux half-life server setup(14 players-2 reserved for Cstrike) and I would love to know how exactly to tweak it to reduce lag and data transfer consumption.

Currently, the rates are:

sv_minrate 9500
sv_maxrate 21000

I seem to get the lowest ping from that, but maybe there's more I can do?

ER, YEAH!!!, sv_minrate 3000 that should do it and low_lag 3, and possibly pingboast 1,2,3. Now I'm an NS server admin so I don't know if pingboast looks like that, but low_lag does exist, also your making people with slower connections work harder, stressing the line, slowing down the server response time. I would serriously consider going to unitedadmins.com forums and asking the guys there specifics.

minrate = 3000
maxrate=8000

No pingboost. Save the CPU for god's sake, you wont notice 15ms difference anyway

On the contrary, the extra free CPU will be much more beneficial in keeping your ping times STABLE.

Low pings are important, stable low pings are FAR more important to a good game experience.

Your rates are totally out of control, how can you even play with those settings?

A good maxrate for a 20 player server is sv_maxrate 10000
Try a maxrate of 7000 for a 14 player server.

A good minrate for a 20 player server is sv_minrate 2500
Minrate for a 14 player server should stay the same.

Ping booster in my book is a joke, other tweaks can boost you ping without turning the CPU to mush.

How fast is the CPU, how much ram? And how many servers you have on one box?

If you read my posts you will find me ranting about running more than one CS game per single CPU machine. Dont do it.

Hope this helped.
