Hosting for a customer - Startup Portal - likey Disk, BW needed
Dear All,
I need to host a customer's portal (a startup - so very low needs).
I'd like to know appx Disk, BW, other resources that the portal is likely to use initially at low traffic stage. How'd that increase as traffic increases in future. Any suggestions, and Benchmarks you'd like to point me to ?
Thanks in advance !

Hi Tekby,
You didn't give much info on your clients business which could make a difference in the type of hosting you will need. For instance if they are going to be doing file sharing or HD photography you'll need more resources then if it was just an eCommerce site.
For the most part you should have all the resources you need with most basic shared hosting accounts (Mysql, PHPMyAdmin, CGI etc). Most are also painlessly upgradable till you reach the point of needing a VPS.
So budget and needs are things to be taken into consideration.

Sorry for missing out portal details:
I've been told, functionally, its a b2b portal which would have all the associated features u mentioned, and advertising based products at different locations - lead banner, side banners, listings etc. And it doesn't have any video, audio streaming needs right now.
Hope I have given some info. Thanx !

Again depending on the size of the business, budget and their expectations on future growth of the site a VPS will give you the expandability and probably a lot more resources than they will need to start.
Good luck,

As the company is a startup, a good shared plan should be fine. You'll probably need less than 1GB space and no more than 5-10GB monthly bandwidth. Obviously as it's one website you'd only need one database (assuming its database-driven) and a few email accounts.
As for expansion, many good providers will work with you to find a suitable solution when you're traffic starts reaching the limit of what shared hosting can do. Speak to the host and see what they can do.

With most $8 / mo shared hosts offering unlimited everything, space / bandwidth doesn't mean much these days. Your clients being a start up, should be okay with the small package of any well known shared host. It should not need more than 2GB -3 GB space and 5-10 GB bandwidth as jcsrv mentioned.
Find a non over selling host that is reliable - something like Liquidweb or ASmallOrange. $20-30 should be good enough for a good shared host, even though you can get it cheaper than that!

What kind of customer portal will you be running? Do you have an application in mind already? This would help us give you better suggestions.

Thanks ! Very good suggestion because I'm likely to go for shared and was doubtful of "unlimited types with overselling allowed". Thanks a lot !
