Okay, I don't want to start annother good, bad thread, so I'm just asking, saw the fdc server deal, is YIPES good for critical latency applications, not that host, but the connection?

Yipes is pretty much like an Internap. Just not quite on the same level yet. Most of the time, it does give pretty good speeds/pings if it isn't oversaturated, as how the host uses their connection does affect latency.
Example, if someone perpetually maxed out the capacity, latency will become an issue from oversaturation and crowded switches. Similarly, someone who doesn't do that, maintaining usage at around 50%, it won't be an issue.

UNLIKE internap...! yipes is a few rungs up from cogent... not much higher...

I think he means Yipes is Cogent-like prices, Internap-like network without the advanced mumbo jumbo bgp, etc. It sort of makes sense....

Yipes! is classified as discount bandwidth (just a few steps above cogent). If I am not mistaken after Yipes! filed for bankruptcy they were acquired by e-xpedient (another discount bandwidth provider). Overall Yipes has a decent network (and this is from my own experience).

I am getting very decent speed from fdc but I wonder how long it'll stay like this. Last time when I signed up with them (cogent back then) I also got good speed the first weeks and everything was fine, but a several weeks later it started with all the packet loss left and righ and it virtually never stopped again.
The speed is very good as it is now. But will it stay like that, this time? I really don't know

well. Many detractors will probably point out that the plans aren't sustainable and FDC will probably say otherwise. I would give them the benefit doubt till proven wrong. However, that said, I don't think I will put anything there for a while.
As for Yipes being similar to Internap but not quite there yet.... what I wanted to say was that it's like a tier before at least. But I guess anything would be similar, and when I type that I wasn't really thinking... the consequence of 4 days and total of 6 hours of sleep....

I have the same opinion with Sprintserve regarding Yipes and Internap. I believe Yipes is a fine bandwidth. Using Level3/Williams (or whichever Yipes chooses to be with), I have seen very rare problem and the uptime has been 100% for several months. I also found that Yipes representative and support are wonderful to work with. Therefore, I would recommend them.
Internap is no question a premium bandwidth. But what I am looking for in bandwidth is:
1. 100% Uptime
2. Low Latency
3. Good peering
4. Good service
5. Affordability
And to me, Yipes does a fine job in all of them.

From my experience, Yipes has a decent network with very good speed and good pings. They use mostly Level3 and Genuity in the mix.

Keep in mind that Yipes is not a bandwidth provider, they are a carrier(sometimes these terms are interchanged so I just wanted to clarify ). They manage the bgp for the hosts and all connections are fiber. For a host not in a carrier hotel they are much easier and less expensive to deal with than any other carriers.
If you went with Level 3 at your dc you would have only one provider and have to pay extra for the local ring. With Yipes you get 4 providers and a local fiber ring.

I'm gonna have to agree, Yipes! is so far a great carrier. We have had almost no problems with them and/or thier service. The only problems that we had were related to thier name servers, and the fact that they had no clue how to keep them online. But after complaining enough and getting corporate attention, they are MUCH better now.
